At the University of Eastern Colorado, Charles & Liam Pace Music Center, the music center is a one-story building with a connected radio tower. The band room is mostly empty. A band director, Timothy, works with a saxophone player, Marty, and a clarinet player, Jessie. A clock on the wall reads 3:23 P.M. Timothy tells her to try again. Marty rolls his eyes. They start playing Rodgers and Hart’s “Where or When.” Timothy shakes his head and says "No. No. No." They stop playing. Timothy says "Again. Just Marty." Marty frowns. Jessie tries to hide a smile. Marty starts playing again. It’s not great. The room starts to rumble. The rumble grows and grows. A meteorite crashes into the building, tearing half the roof off the music center. The meteorite crushes Timothy. Jessie starts screaming. A fiery red fungus rapidly expands out from the meteorite’s wreckage. It climbs walls and grows into the darkness outside.
Marty tells Jessie to quit screaming. She does. Marty asks why it's dark outside. If the question was directed at Jessie, she doesn’t acknowledge it. Jessie sees something moving in the shadows. Jessie says she doesn’t think they’re alone. She quickly scans the room, looking for movement. Marty looks around, skeptical. A shadow demon emerges from the darkness and slices Marty in half with its claws. Jessie starts screaming again.
The KUEC station is calm and quiet. Night has fallen quickly. Inside the station, there’s a large room in the center. Off to one side are the DJ booth and a separate booth for a producer. On the opposite wall are two offices. A banner on the back wall says “Home of the Big Horns.” A staff meeting is taking place and the table in the center of the room is full. Charles is the station manager. He leads the meeting.
Charles says they haven’t received any news from the government in more than an hour. And it looks like going outside is a death sentence, so my suggestion is to all hunker down here for now. The assembled students nod or murmur assent. Charles wears a golden cross around his neck. Lorna hustles into the room, late, but in a hurry. Scott holds out a chair for Lorna, but she passes him up to sit next to Jean. Jean gives Lorna a kiss on the cheek. Charles says the radio station is on random right now. And he's not sure how long he trusts the randomness. Charles says TV is dead. And none of the other and regional stations is still broadcasting. They’ve been on the air continuously since the 1960s. He doesn’t want that streak to end. Everyone is shocked. Charles says "If we’re stuck here, my proposal is WE keep broadcasting. Everyone can take a turn as a DJ and play whatever they want." Charles says that as station manager, he should go first, and Scott’s been there the longest, so he should go second. Bobby grabs a sheet of scrap paper and starts a list. Charles chooses the order, while Jean and Lorna quietly make fun of him. The meeting breaks up. Jean and Lorna head outside to smoke.
Jean and Lorna share a cigarette. Jean says that was a shitshow. Lorna says it could be fun. Lorna and Jean kiss. Alex walks outside, catching the end of the women’s kiss. He frowns. Alex walks up to Lorna. Jean tosses the last of the cigarette away and goes back inside. Alex asks Lorna if they can talk. Lorna drops her head in frustration. She takes a deep breath. She says they have nothing left to talking about. She pushes past him. Lorna jogs to catch up with Jean. They link arms and head inside. Jean looks back at Alex with a devilish grin. Lorna doesn’t look back.
Charles‘ Shift: Charles is in the DJ booth. Bobby is on the board. Charles says they will keep broadcasting as long as they're all still around. They’ve been continuously on the air since the 1960s and he doesn’t want that to end now. They have 10 DJs, who will each take an hour shift. They’ll play music, whatever they want, no mandated playlists, and they’ll take calls. They aren’t in contact with any authorities, so they don’t really know what’s going on out there.
Lorna, Jean and Alex watch Charles through the booth’s window. The broadcast plays in the main room. Lorna asks if they're really doing this. Alex says looks like it. Charles plays mild jazz. He takes his headphones off and the music fades to background levels. Charles gets up and walks to the door between booths. Charles asks Bobby to hand him that bottle of Scotch. Bobby turns to the filing cabinet and opens the bottom drawer. He pulls out a half-full bottle of Scotch and hands it to Charles. Charles ask if they've had any calls yet. Bobby shakes his head. Charles pours himself a glass of Scotch. He holds the bottle up to the window and shakes it. Calvin steps into the DJ booth and grabs the bottle. Charles tells them to enjoy. Calvin goes back to the main room and shares the Scotch.
Charles says he's a devout Christian and he really thinks that what they’re seeing has to be God’s wrath. And with all the sinning that goes on in the world, he's surprised this didn’t happen sooner. Charles wipes tears from his eyes and apologizes for bringing everyone down. Charles plays Herbie Hancock and bops along with the music. He cuts his mic and starts weeping.
The First Caller is Rose. She stands in front of the journalism building, talking on her phone. Charles notes that Rose is KUEC’s field correspondent. Charles asks Rose what she's seeing out there. Rose stands in the darkness. The black sky is void of the moon and stars. Rose says the smell is much worse, like sulfur and evil. Rose says that among the crazy things she's heard or seen, it seems like everyone had nightmares last night and a lot of people report that their nightmares are coming true. People wander around aimlessly. They look tired and dazed. Rose is enraged, but she holds back. A bit. Rose says "How the fuck should I know, Charles?" Rose cuts loose. Rose says "You fucking cuck loser! You’re the worst manager I’ve ever seen!" A man in a Bill Clinton mask sneaks up behind Rose. He carries a knife. The masked man steps closer and raises his knife. He slashes her throat. She falls, dropping her phone on the ground. Charles is puzzled. He starts getting frantic. Rose stares into the darkness as she bleeds out. The man takes off his mask, to reveal his face. He says "This is Mortimer." Mortimer says "Rose? Is that who that was? Good to know her name. She didn’t scream when I killed her. I was looking forward to her screams." He laughs longer and louder. Evil laughter echoes through the station. The students in the main room shiver with fear and revulsion. Charles cuts Mortimer off. He’s totally shaken up. Charles pushes play on Benny Goodman.
Alex, Lorna, Jean, Warren, Scott, Hank, Calvin and Sean sit around the table, snacking on leftovers from a recent station party. Jean says Charles is nice and all, but he sucks as a manager. Lorna can't stand him. Calvin says "fuck that. He’s always been good to me." Warren wonders what they are gonna eat. Alex wonders about clean water. Lorna wonders about showers. Alex tells Lorna to get her priorities straight. Lorna is wounded. Jean notices. She Alex to shut the fuck up. Alex is embarrassed to be chastised in front of everyone. Everyone else pretends like it didn’t happen.
Scott‘s Shift: Scott is in the DJ booth. Charles is on the board. Scott plays hardcore punk. Scott rocks along to the song. Bobby joins him. Everyone in the main room joins in to sing and dance along.
Alex, Lorna, Jean, Warren, Hank, Calvin, Bobby and Sean sit around the table. They’re all full, but they haven’t put the leftovers away yet. Warren asks if they can just play anything now. Bobby says it seems that way. Sean asks if they're all gonna die. Everyone considers the question. Alex says he thinks so. The room goes quiet.
The Second Caller is Ethan. He stands on the streets of downtown Boulder. The temperature is so low, ice is starting to form on any surface it can. Ethan stands on a downtown sidewalk, in front of a store called Minnie’s Haberdashery. Ethan says "it’s snowing. Which is crazy, since it was over 90 at noon." He looks down the street as bodies lay freezing on the ground. Ethan stares at the chaos before him. Everything around him is covered with ice and snow. Snow falls from the sky. Despite the snow, there are fires everywhere. Ethan says "I don’t know if it’s the weather or whatever, but it’s turning into mass chaos out here." Scott is puzzled. Ethan says he can’t stay on the line too long. Ethan says "there’s fire everywhere, buildings are crumbling, people are running around screaming, looting, assaulting people, just utter chaos." A nearby building crumbles from previous structural damage. A man wearing a Trump mask runs up to Ethan. The Masked Man swings a baseball bat at Ethan. The swing misses. Ethan drops his phone as he backs away. The Masked Man hits Ethan in the side of the head with a heavy thunk. The thunk echoes inside in the radio station. Scott says "I guess we lost Ethan." Jean holds a sign up to the glass. It reads “play something!” Scott plays punk. Jean grins at Scott through the glass. He grins back. She starts dancing. Lorna, Warren, Hank, and Sean join her.
Sean stands outside, smoking a joint. He leans against the side of the building. He takes a long hit and holds it in as long as he can. He coughs as he exhales. Jean comes out. She leans against the wall next to Sean. Jean asks if she can I have a hit of that. He offers her the joint. She takes it hits it for less time than Sean did. She hands it back. Sean if he would like to go out with him. She says she's with someone. Sean says "You don’t want to go out with me because you’re into women." Jean says "Something like that." Sean passes her the joint again. She takes a bigger hit than before. Sean says "That’s cool." Jean exhales. He takes another toke, finishing the joint. He reaches in his pocket and pulls out a black plastic tube with a joint inside and gives it to Jean. He says he's got more than enough to get him through to the end of the world.
Bobby‘s Shift: Bobby is in the DJ booth. Charles is on the board. Bobby plays classic rock. Bobby has written an A-Z list of bands everyone has to hear before they all die. He plays the list.
Alex, Lorna, Jean, Warren, Scott, Hank, Calvin and Sean sit around the table. Charles’ bottle of Scotch sits on the table. Empty. Warren asks who’s the artist you have to hear one last time. Everyone answers, but there is tension between Alex and Jean and Lorna and between Jean and Hank. Hank goes outside and the door closes behind him. The room breaks out in laughter.
The Third Caller is Kate. She stands outside the sorority house, on her phone. There are a few other sorority girls outside, hurrying toward safety. Kate says she knows no one’s gonna believe this, but things are unhinged out here. Nearly everything is on fire--the worst fires she's ever seen. Somebody heard that the rivers have dried up. Not a river, but all the rivers. Kate stares off into the distance. Kate says it gets stranger, everyone I see out here has open, pus-oozing sores and their eyes turn black. Then some of them turn evil. Kate’s eyes turn black. She is covered with sores. Kate is clearly possessed. Kate says they’re all gonna die. Kate sees several sorority girls. She drops her phone and chases them.
The girls scream and take off running. Kate chases them. Kate’s cackle echoes throughout the station. Charles hangs up on Kate’s phone. He shakes his head. He’s afraid and offended. Bobby feels shame for offending Charles. Bobby plays oldies.
Bobby rushes outside, his phone rings. He stares at the screen, which reads “Girlfriend.” He paces back and forth, worried. He finally answers it. Sherry talks, she’s angry. She wants to say more, but she holds back. Bobby acts like he doesn’t know what she’s talking about. Bobby says he didn’t do anything. He doesn’t know what she's talking about. Sherry calls him a fucking loser. He doesn’t respond. She’s so angry, she has tears in her eyes. Sherry says she knows what he did with the pictures. He drops his head in shame. Bobby says "He wasn’t supposed to share them." Sherry says no, Bobby wasn’t supposed to share them. He’s too embarrassed to respond. She won’t let him apologize. Sherry tells him to get fucked. She doesn’t care if he's the last man on Earth, she doesn’t ever want to see or hear from him ever again. Bobby’s frantic. Bobby says he can’t handle it without her. Sherry says she doesn’t care, she hopes he dies alone. She hangs up. He screams and throws his phone into the night. He leans against the wall and starts crying. He dries his eyes and walks off into the night.
Warren‘s Shift: Warren is in the DJ booth. Charles is on the board. He used to be the weather man. He plays dance pop. Warren is ready and reads from a prepared weather report. Warren forecasts darkness and bad weather continuing until the apocalypse ends. He plays more dance pop.
Alex, Lorna, Jean, Warren, Scott, Hank, Calvin and Sean sit around the table. Most of the students have open beers. Sean asks if they are gonna have to go outside. Alex says "Eventually, right?" The mood turns somber. Jean asks where Bobby is. No one knows. The room goes quiet.
The Fourth Caller is Leonardo. He calls from the stands at Mile High Stadium. Leonardo says "I heard your ‘weather report.’ That wasn’t funny. That’s what I’m actually seeing out here." He sits in a stadium seat, keeping an eye on what’s happening on the field. Leonardo says "You don’t want to see what I’m seeing..." It’s raining. There are fires everywhere. Leonardo says "Normally, I can see water from the window here. At a minimum, I can clearly see Sloan's Lake or the South Platte river. But, today?" The lakebed and riverbed are dry. Everywhere he looks, the plants are dead or dying. Leonardo says "It gets worse. I once read a book about the Vietnam War. They were talking about one of the battlefields... Khe San or Tet or whatever... The author said the battlefield was a 'feast for the vultures.' Meaning the dead were so plentiful that no vulture went hungry until after they cleaned up all the bodies." He looks out over the football field. It was recently the sight of a massive fight. Bloody corpses and severed limbs cover the fields. Some vultures circle the field; others pick among the bodies for their latest meal. Leonardo says "That’s what it’s like out here." A massive storm heads towards the stadium. It crackles with lightning. It’s moving toward the stadium, quickly. Leonardo says "A storm is approaching. It’s massive and looks like danger." Warren asks if he can get somewhere safe. Leonardo panics. Leonardo says it’s already here. "It’s destroying everything."
The storm rolls in. Leonardo tries to find shelter, buy it’s too late. Lightning strikes near Leonardo. A tornado appears. It moves towards Leonardo. He tries to run but the path of the tornado follows him. The winds lift him into the air. He screams, but the wind quickly muffles his voice. He flies into the dark, cloudy sky and is never seen again. Charles says they have dead air. Warren sits up sharply. Warren says he's gay. Applause from the crowd around the window. Lorna says everybody already knew. Jean says nobody cares. Charles says he didn’t know and he cares. The crowd laughs. Warren grins. Warren says let’s dance. He plays danceable hip hop. Everyone dances except Charles and Hank.
Warren takes off the headphones and walks towards the door of the DJ booth. Hank is walking in at the same moment. They bump into each other and apologizes. Hank tries to head into the DJ booth. Warren asks if they can talk. Hank says no.
Hank sits in the DJ’s chair. Warren considers leaving without saying any more. He reconsiders and turns toward Hank. Warren says Hank's willing to greet the end of the world without forgiving him. Hank says yes. Hank starts his on-air radio shift. Charles waves at Warren to get out of the booth. He leaves.
Hank‘s Shift: Hank is in the DJ booth. Charles is on the board. Hank says it looks like there won’t be any more sports to report, so he's gonna play some of his favorite songs. He plays butt rock. Hank says the thing he’ll miss the most is reporting on the games. He pulls a flask from his jacket pocket and takes a sip. Hank says he'll mostly miss football and baseball, but he doesn’t mind a good hockey game. In person, he’ll miss softball the most. He says that old sports are ending, but think of all the new post-apocalyptic sports starting soon. He says he always did want to try Soylent Green.
Alex, Lorna, Jean, Warren, Scott, Calvin and Sean sit around the table. Someone has turne0 off the internal broadcast and they can no longer hear the KUEC broadcast. Scott says which sport people would play, the post-apocalyptic ones. Everyone thinks about the question. Scott says the Long Walk. Sean says he wouldn’t play any of them. Lorna says the Hunger Games. Jean picks the Hunger Games, too. Warren picks the Running Man. Calvin says he's not playing their little game. He finishes his beer and tosses the empty can in the corner. It joins a few others already there. Jean tells him not litter in the studio. Scott, Sean and Alex also throw their empty cans in the corner. Lorna and Jean are incredulous. Then they smile. They turn and throw their empty cans, too. The boys laugh and cheer. Sean asks if a storm gonna take out this building, too. No one knows, so the room goes quiet.
The Fifth Caller: Emma stands on the roof of the hotel, talking on her phone. Emma looks over the edge of the building. But she starts to get vertigo and backs away. She says she's on the roof of the Horne Hotel. Emma says the sun is just gone. She feels insulted that he doesn’t take her word for anything. Emma says "I can’t believe what I saw today, but some of the mountains that I’ve seen every day of my life are just gone." Emma says "There was an earthquake earlier and the mountains just crumbled." He doesn’t believe her. Emma says "Only about half of them." Lightning pierces the darkness. Thunder crashes. Emma looks at the sky. Rain starts falling. She rubs the skin on her arm. It starts raining harder. Hank asks her what’s happening. Emma cries between her screams. Emma says "The rain! It burns! It burns!" The rain is highly acidic and it starts to burn Emma’s skin off. Emma keeps screaming. Charles quickly cuts off the screams.
Hank stands outside, leaning against the wall. He’s crying. Warren walks outside. Hank quickly wipes away the tears and pretends he wasn’t crying. Warren says if you hadn’t been killing dogs, he wouldn’t have had to turn him in. Hank calls him a fucking traitorous snitch who turns on his fucking family. Hank pokes Warren’s chest with his index finger. It hurts Warren, who recoils. Warren says Hank weas murdering dogs. Hank tries to defend his actions. Warren call bullshit. Hank shoves Warren, who falls to the ground. Warren gets up and goes inside. Hank laughs, but the laughter dies once Warren is inside. A look of fear and regret covers Hank’s face.
Jean‘s Shift: Jean is in the DJ booth. Charles is on the board. Jean says "It’s the end of the fucking world, let’s play some sad songs." Jean says "Some people think Armageddon is a punishment sent by God." Jean glares at Charles. He looks away. Jean continues "But where’s the logic in that? Every single human being is so guilty of sin, everyone deserves to die?" She pointedly glares at Charles. He continues to avoid her stare. She says that a loving god wouldn't kill all the children. Jean says this is all random nature. We shit on the environment so long, it finally decided to shit back. Jean says they should get back to the music.
Alex, Lorna, Warren, Scott, Hank, Calvin and Sean sit around the table. Lorna asks if the mountains are gone. Sean wonders what else is gone. Scott says before the Internet went down, I saw that all the major European and Asian cities are gone. The room sits quiet with that thought.
Charles says he didn’t like that song. It was scary. Jean laughs at him. Charles asks if the Spider Man is really having him for dinner tonight. More laughter. Jean says probably. Charles shivers in fear.
The Sixth Caller is Michael. He calls from the roof the theater. Michael knows Jean. They did theater together. Michael tries to hide the fact that he’s in love with Jean. Jean is sad that theater is coming to an end. Michael says they were gonna do Pippen next. He was gonna play Pippen. Michael says "A fucking tsunami hit the theater." Michael scans the water-damaged area around the theater. Michael says "Most of this part of Boulder is decimated. A wave hit the city." Jean is shocked. Michael says "we got pretty violent winds that added to the breakdown of infrastructure." The corner falls from a nearby bank building, making Michael flinch. A new wave heads towards him. It’s taller than any of the nearby buildings. Michael is resigned to his fate. Jean tells him to run and find safety. Michael says it’s too late. The giant wave dwarfs the theater. Michel disappears into the water. Michael’s phone cuts off. Jean says "This isn’t fun anymore. I don’t want people to keep dying." She loses her fight and the tears flow. Lorna opens the door and runs to hug Jean. They start to make out. Charles turns his head, but still watches with a dirty grin on his face. The women catch him. Lorna calls him a pervert. Jean plays goth, then goes back to kissing Lorna.
Jean stands outside. She lights the joint and takes a big toke. She exhales. Alex comes outside and makes a beeline for Jean. Alex says he's got a bone to pick with her. Jean insults him. He grabs her arm. Jean pulls her arm free. Alex tells her to get it through her head, Lorna’s his. Jean says that’s not what she said last night when she was eating her. Alex’s hand flies towards her. He smashes his hand, palm first, against the wall behind her. She ducks under his arm. Jean calls him a psycho. She runs for the door and goes inside. Alex stews in his anger and takes a walk around the building.
Calvin‘s Shift: Calvin is in the DJ booth. Charles is on the board. Calvin says it is his first time on the air. He's usually works as a security guard. Calvin plays Morgan Wallen. Jean walks into the booth and to the computer and hits play on the next song, Sturgill Simpson. Jean says it’s the end of the world, they’re not listening to fucking Morgan Wallen. She walks back out of the booth without looking back. Calvin chuckles.
Calvin hopes everyone is staying safe. He sips from a beer. He's a dropout and he wonders if he still has time to get those last 15 credits. He looks at Charles, who shakes his head humorlessly. Calvin is crestfallen. He plays country music.
Lorna, Jean, Warren, Scott, Hank and Sean sit around the table. Alex comes from the producer’s booth and takes a seat at the table. Alex says they're not getting paid again. Sean wonders why they are still there. Hank asks if they want to go out there. Sean asks where they would even go. Jean calls for a union meeting. Hank reminds her management didn’t recognize the union. So it doesn’t matter. Jean asks if anybody had seen Bobby in a while. No one answers. Alex stares at Jean. She pretends not to notice. She turns to look at Lorna. Lorna asks if she and Michael have a thing. Jean looks surprised. Jean says she thinks he wanted that, but she's just not into guys. Lorna leans in and kisses Jean. When the kiss ends, Jean looks up to see that Alex is glaring at her. Jean doesn’t say anything.
The Seventh Caller is Wagner. He calls from a mass protest on the school’s grassy quad. Hundreds of students are gathered. Wagner says he knows all about Calvin. Calvin gets defensive. Wagner toys with Calvin. Wagner gets serious. He pulls out a stack of stapled-together papers and flips through them. He smiles when he finds what he’s looking for. Wagner says "According to my sources, you have two arrests on your record. One time was for trespassing in the U.S. Capitol and assaulting a member of the U.S. Capitol Police. Turns out the man you assaulted never walked again. For the other arrest... while working for I.C.E., you were arrested for gunning down an unarmed civilian peacekeeper." Calvin tries to defend himself, but Charles tells him to move on. Wagner says " things look pretty bad out here. It looks like we’re being overrun by the living dead out here. Like from those Romero movies." A zombie bites a student, but far from where Wagner stands. He shivers in fear. Wagner says "When you’ve seen as many horror movies as I have, you can spot the beginning of a zombie apocalypse when you see one." Calvin asks what they want. Wagner laughs. Wagner says "They want to enslave us! Annihilate us! Eat us!" One of the zombies bites a bystander. This time it’s really close to Wagner. He drops his phone on the grass and tries to help the bystanders. More zombies converge on them. Wagner screams, but a zombie bites him in the throat and the scream stops. Zombies consume Wagner and the bystander. The sounds of zombies eating flesh fills the station. Charles cuts the call. Calvin plays Willie Nelson.
Calvin and Jean stand outside. He leans against the wall. She stands a few feet away, smoking. Jean asks if those things are true. Calvin says sorta. Jean gets angry and calls him a loser. Calvin tries to defend himself but Jean rejects him. Calvin huffs up and walks to his truck, saying he's got something for her. He goes in his truck and pulls out an aluminum baseball bat. Scared, Jean moves towards the door to the studio. Calvin walks over to Jean’s car. He smashes in the driver’s side window. Jean screams, then runs inside. It takes him four swings, but Calvin smashes the windshield.
Lorna‘s Shift: Lorna is in the DJ booth. Charles is on the board. Lorna plays dance music. Lorna says she could sit here and keep playing classic jams for them, but if it’s the end of the world, why would she waste time doing that. Lorna lists all the things they won't have to deal with anymore. Lorna tells the listeners not to call in, they're all annoying. Charles turns on his mic and chastises her. She shrugs and plays more dance music.
Alex, Jean, Warren, Scott, Hank and Sean sit around the table. Calvin walks in carrying the bat. He sits in the same seat, almost daring someone to say something. Jean says "No way! That guy’s crazy!" Alex asks what he did. Jean says "He smashed up my car with that bat!" Warren says for everyone’s safety. Alex tries to defend Calvin (and maybe himself). Alex calls for a vote. Calvin, Hank and Alex for for Calvin to stay. Jean, Lorna and Sean vote for him to go. Scott abstains. Lorna sticks her head in from the DJ booth and says "he’s gotta go." Warren says Calvin's got to go. Calvin says no. The room explodes with anger and confusion. Calvin slams the bat on the table. Every one goes silent. The sound of a gunshot. A bullet whizzes by Calvin’s head. Charles has emerged and points a gun at Calvin. He tells Calvin to get out of my station. Calvin heads towards the door. Calvin disappears through the front door. Charles let’s go of the tension he was holding in. Jean, Lorna and Warren hug him while the others look on. Alex looks on with a frown.
The Eighth Caller is Amy. She stands in front of City Hall, speaking into her phone. Lorna says how she knows Amy. Amy says they're in the same sorority. Amy says she's been doing her best to urge legislators to do something about this apocalypse. Lorna asks what Amy wants them to do. An evil grin takes over Amy’s face. Amy says "To punish sinners like you of course." Amy and calls Lorna a slut. Lorna says if Amy doesn’t calm down, Lorna will hang up on her. Amy says "the apocalypse is because of people like you. Adulterous sinful lesbians." Lorna says "Hey! I’m a lesbian and I’m a sinner, but I am NOT adulterous. I was never even engaged to Alex, much less married. And that motherfucker cheated on me first!" Amy says if what the commission discussed is true, she doesn’t know what any of us are going to do. Amy says "the commissioners spoke about the sudden, dark corruption of societal morals. There’s been a rapid decline in morality, a real breakdown of societal order." She says "It sounds like fascism to me, they’re talking about the imposition of a new oppressive hierarchy, the mayor has hired private security contractors." A private security contractor walks up to Amy and shoots her in the forehead. Lorna is shocked. Jean walks into the DJ booth. She walks over to Lorna and starts rubbing her back. Charles frowns. Lorna hits play and leaves the DJ booth. Lorna walks out of the DJ booth as Alex arrives for his shift. Alex tries to apologize but Jean tells him to fuck off. Jean puts her arm around Lorna and leads her away. Alex glares at Jean with evil intent. Then he goes in the booth.
Alex‘s Shift: Alex is in the DJ booth. Charles is on the board. Alex plays indie pop. Alex collects his thoughts before speaking. He says it’s true that he dated Lorna and it’s true that he slept with someone else, but he could tell by then that Lorna was a lesbian. He says they stopped having sex and he has needs. Charles tells Alex it's says it's time to move on or he'll cut Alex off. Alex plays more indie pop.
The Ninth Caller is Inga. She stands outside the state capitol building in Denver, talking on her phone. Jean steps into the producer’s booth and grabs a hammer. Alex is happy. He says "Folks, this is my big sister, Inga." Inga says "I didn’t want to be on the air, I just wanted to talk to you." Inga says "What the fuck is wrong with you, Alex?" Alex frowns. Inga says "You cheated on Lorna? How could you?" Alex says "I don’t really know. Because I’m a man?" Inga says "Not a very good one, it seems." Inga says "It seems like everything that can go wrong IS going wrong." Inga pulls out a report and reads passages she has already marked with highlighter. Inga says "We are starting to see the removal of modern agricultural systems that could leave soil depleted or contaminated; plastic pollution and chemical runoff create soups of debris; released toxins, dioxins, and gases into the air; radioactive contamination of soil and food chains. We could also see exterior forces like asteroids or gamma-ray bursts or toxic, black sandstorms. The end is extremely fucking nigh. I see the four horsemen of pestilence, war, famine, and death." Inga watches as the horsemen literally approach her. The horseman of Death approaches her closely. Death uses a scythe to cut her head off. Alex cries while they basically have dead air. Charles wants to chastise him, but can’t get past the tears.
Lorna walks outside. Alex stands a few feet from the door, crying. Lorna tries to comfort him, but he tells her to go away. He tries to hide his tears. Lorna says she's sorry about his sister. Alex gets angry and says she doesn’t care. He says this is all her fault Lorna says he sounds insane. Alex threatens her. She rushes back inside. He starts crying again.
Sean‘s Shift: Sean is in the DJ booth. Charles is on the board. Sean plays new wave. Sean says it's the final “Sleeping with Sean” episode. He wants everyone enjoys what time they do have left. He plays metal.
Alex stands outside, smoking. Jean creeps around the side of the building, carrying the hammer. Jean smashes the hammer down on Alex’s head. He drops his cigarette and leans hard against the wall. His back against the wall, Alex slides down to a sitting position. She hits him again and he falls silent. She hits him again. And again. Alex has stopped moving. Jean takes a closer look to confirm he’s dead. She turns and throws the hammer into the darkness, away from the parked cars.
The Tenth Caller: No one answers. Charles confirms they do have a caller, The power goes out. The station is plunged into darkness. Lorna screams. Jean comforts her. On the phone Rodney says "I am here." Sean acknowledges him. The caller says he's Rodney Ferris. He's studying the law. He's outside.
Jean wanders into the main room. She has a dazed look on her face and visible blood on her shoes. Nobody notices her until she screams. Jean screams fire. Everybody turns to look where she’s pointing--at the two offices opposite the booths. Both are in flames. The students rush outside. Sean and Charles look at each other with panic. Charles says they’ve never gone off the air. Sean asks if he wants to burn to death. The smoke makes Charles cough. He says no. Charles flips a switch and the station broadcast ends. Charles is almost in tears. Sean leads Charles out of the station.
The students walk out of the station, coughing and rubbing their eyes. Jean says they’ve gotta get out of here. They try to run, but they’re blocked by zombies, shadow demons and imps. Scott asks what they're gonna do now. A giant of a man steps forward, This is Rodney Ferris. He says "You’re going to listen. Then some of you are going to die." He emits an evil laugh. The students cower, moving closer to the station, which is now fully engulfed in flames. Ferris says "I know you’re afraid. But this isn’t the end. Think of it more as a reboot. A cleanse." Ferris says "It means widespread famine and economic ruin... The end of agricultural production... The destruction of the vast majority of species... Severe ecosystem damage... Widespread pollution... Radioactive contamination of soil and food chains... Without maintenance, synthetic materials and chemicals will degrade in unpredictable ways... The earth’s green grass and trees all die... Seas, rivers and freshwater springs turn to blood killing all aquatic life... Billions of humans will die... Those who survive... Get to start over." The students cower in fear. Ferris brings forth Bobby, Calvin and Alex. Bobby is possessed and covered with open sores. The other two are zombies. Ferris tells Scott to step forward. Ferris says Scott has the area’s largest collection of pornography starring children. Ferris raises a hand and hits Bobby with a blast of super-cooled air. Bobby is frozen solid. Ferris walks to Bobby and pushes him over with ease. Bobby’s frozen form shatters. The women scream. Ferris says it's Hank's turn. Ferris waves a hand and Hank no longer has a mouth. Ferris waves a hand and a very localized storm appears above Hank. Acid rain falls on Hank and starts to burn him. Acid lands on his face and burns through the skin, opening the way to his mouth. Hank’s screams can be heard briefly before he burns to death and falls quiet. Lorna buries her head in Jean’s shoulder so she doesn’t have to watch. Ferris calls forth Sean. Ferris says Sean stole a large amount of money from the radio station. Sean looks down in shame. Ferris tells his servants to take Sean. Bobby, Calvin and Alex attack Sean. They tear his flesh away and eat him. He screams until Alex bites his throat away. Warren, Jean, Lorna and Charles watch, crying. Their former friends continue to eat Sean. Ferris says they are free. For now. "Be careful you don’t keep sinning." Ferris emits an evil laugh. Then he flies straight up into the sky. The zombies, shadow demons and imps slowly walk away. Bobby, Calvin and Alex keep eating Sean. Charles leads Lorna, Jean and Warren to a nearby classroom building. They go inside.
Sitting in a group of chairs huddled together are Warren, Jean, Lorna and Charles. Lorna asks if it just the four of them. Warren says it Looks like it. Charles asks what they have in common that we were spared. Warren says "Most of us are gay." Charles says he's not. Jean says "What are our other big sins? Maybe they’re not really sins?" Charles considers it, then shrugs. Warren says he ratted out his brother for running a deadly dogfighting ring. Lorna says "that’s a legit reason to rat out a family member if I ever heard one." Jean says she was failing all her classes and was about to be kicked out of school. She was taking a lot of Adderall and coke. Jean says before Lorna, she slept around a lot. Lorna says they say she cheated on Alex, but he cheated on her first. She says she's not much of a sinner. Jean says she killed Alex with a hammer. But he threatened to kill both Lorna and her. So that was really self defense. Charles says he's a pretty big sinner. Everyone disagrees. Charles says he can be smug and prideful about his Christianity, he's a pretty bad manager and he's very judgmental. But he didn’t vote for Donald Trump. Warren says that alone almost makes him a good guy. Laughter. Lorna says Alex was an abuser, cheater, all-around misogynist, racist and homophobe. Warren says Bobby shared his girlfriend’s naked pictures with other people. Lorna says Calvin did that January 6 stuff and killed a protester. Lorna asks if Scott was really into kiddie porn. Warren says his brother was a pretty bad homophobe. And he killed a lot of dogs. Jean says Sean stole a lot of money from the station. Lorna says they’re not as bad as those guys, but what else do they have in common? Warren says music. They have that in common. Warren says Lorna and he played music that made people dance, Charles played music that made old people dance, and Jean played music that made depressed people happy. Charles says "Music, huh?" They all sit with the thought of playing music and making people dance.
The four remaining students walk outside. The sun is finally starting to break through the darkness. Jean asks what time it is. Warren asks if time even means anything any more. They let the suggestion hang in the silence. Charles asks if the Spiderman still going to have him for dinner tonight. Everyone laughs. Jean says probably. More laughter. Lorna stares at the sunrise, which is beautiful and says "No. I don’t think so. Hell is retreating." Everyone looks around. Charles nods aggressively. He wants it to be true. Lorna says "We get to start over..." Jean smiles. She says "Without all the assholes." Everyone laughs. Charles says "Language!" More laughter. They walk towards the sunrise.
