In a wealthy, mostly-white suburb of Atlanta, Georgia, two boys walk to school, Walt Finnegan and Glen McReynolds. They discuss Re-Animator.
They walk quietly for a few moments. They don’t notice the rabies warning posters stapled to every utility pole. Walt asks if he's going to go see Bugonia. Glen says he probably will.
A German shepherd comes running at them, full speed. It’s eyes are red and it has blood on its fur. He points at the dog. Both boys tremble with fear. Walt asks if they should run. Glen shakes his head. He said the dog will chase them. He says to use their backpacks to ward off the dog. Glen grips his backpack in front of him with both hands. Walt does the same. They brace for impact. Walt asks if Glen's sure the backpacks will work. Glen asks what else they can do. The dog spots closer prey and turns to chase a man. It catches him and bites the man’s arm. Walt and Glen breath heavy sighs of relief.
They run the rest of the way to school. They arrive at the busy Druid Hills High School. The sign out front says “Home of The Red Devils.” The first bell rings and everyone heads inside.
Walt’s mom, Francine, pulls into the Lenox Square Mall parking lot and parks. She gets out of the car and goes inside.
Francine walks through the mall, window shopping. She’s carrying an umbrella. She stops outside the window of the Pet Store window. She spots a chihuahua she likes and fixates on it, trying to get it’s attention. She gets frustrated and taps on the glass next to the “Please Don’t Tap On the Glass” sign.
Back at the high school, Walt and Glen part ways and go in neighboring classrooms. Seconds later, both doors open and all the students start filing into the hallway. Walt and Glen are among the first out of each classroom. The classes merge and join the rest of the student body. Walt says everyone's going to the gym. Glen looks towards the front of the crowd. He’s nervous. He doesn’t see anything. He puts his hands in the pockets of his Hawks hoodie. They follow the crowd into the gym.
Walt and Glen walk into the gym. Walt sees the school mascot, which is a live wolf on a leash. He grins. Walt approaches it, convinced it's a dog, not a wolf. Glen warns him it's a wolf. They debate what it is.
Glen sees Jodi, lined up with the cheerleaders. He waves, she waves back. Walt sees Cynthia, sitting in the front row. She’s saved seats for them. They join her with greetings. Walt asks if she knows what's going on. She says no, but she can tell it's bad because everyone is present. She points to a group of adults at one end of the gym. One of the teachers pulls down a projector screen. Another sets up a laptop and projector. The buzz among the students gets loud. They want to know what’s happening.
The principal speaks into a megaphone. He quiets the students down. He says they're facing a national emergency and that they're all in danger! The room goes silent. The principal starts a streaming newscast clip. Sitting at a studio desk are a white male anchor and a Black female anchor. The anchors tell the story in brief: Reports are coming in from across the country. The zombies are back. And this time they’re everywhere. Zombies have been sighted in 49 of 50 states, with Hawaii being the only holdout. And experts say it’s only a matter of time before zombies make it to Hawaii. Airplanes and ocean-going ships are expected to be the catalyst for the Aloha state. More than 150 countries have also reported zombie outbreaks at this time, with that number expected to top 190 within the hour. Meanwhile, experts recommend that those who can shelter-in-place do so. And that you don’t answer the door for anyone. Barricade yourself in your home, if possible. If you don’t have enough supplies, call 555-4237. Volunteers will deliver to your home as long as supplies last. Stay safe out there. And stayed tuned for more details as they become available. The video stops. Grumblings and whispers fill the room. The principal gets on the mic again.
The principal says they've called the buses to take everyone home, but they’re running late. So until they arrive, students should go to their regular class schedule. The students groan and grumble. Melvin yells "I ain’t no Runnin’ Rebel!" and thrusts his fist into the air. He answers himself with "I’m a winner, a Red Devil!" Everyone laughs nervously. Beuter says that reaction wasn't good enough.
He starts a rhythmic clap. He walks back and forth of the students, all but demanding that they clap along. They go faster and faster, whipping themselves into a frenzy. Beuter points at Melvin, who says "I ain’t no Runnin’ Rebel!" He thrusts his fist into the air. Beuter points his finger at the crowd, who respond "I’m a winner, a Red Devil!" They break into applause and everyone files out of the gym with their spirits raised.
At the mall, Francine is still looking through the window at the chihuahua. She looks closer, the dog has red eyes and blood on its fur. A customer reaches to pet the chihuahua. The dog bites her hand. Francine screams outside the store; the customer screams inside the store. The dog rips the customer’s hand off with a swift move. It turns and makes eye contact with Francine. Francine turns and runs. Seconds later the chihuahua emerges from the pet store, running full speed, the bloody hand still in its mouth. The dog makes a beeline for Francine.
She stops and turns to face the dog. She kicks it and the dog flies against the windows of the sporting goods store. It crumples to the floor, dropping the hand.
At the high school, Cynthia and Jodi approach the librarian’s desk, books in hand. A line of at least a half-dozen students is already in front of them.
Jodi says it has to be fake, zombies aren't real. Cynthia's not sure. Jodi thanks Cynthia for help on her paper. Cynthia says she wants to be a teacher.
A commotion breaks out at the library’s front door. A zombie came into the library and is trying to bite a student that was trying to leave. A second zombie pushes it’s way into the library. It makes it’s way towards the checkout line. It bites a girl in the line. She screams. Cynthia screams for someone to do something.
Jodi looks around and sees a teen sitting at a nearby table, a cast on her foot. And two crutches leaning against the table. Jodi drops her books and grabs the crutches. Jodi hands one of the crutches to Cynthia and they go after the zombies. Jodi goes after the zombie that attacked the girl in line. She swings the crutch and smashes the zombie in the back of the head. It falls to the floor, unconscious.
Cynthia tells her "nice shot." Jodi nods towards the zombie. Jodi says "your turn." Cynthia steadies herself then moves towards the second zombie. She swings the crutch as hard as she can and hits the zombie in its chest. The zombies is unharmed, but now it’s focused on Cynthia. It lurches toward her. Jodi swings her crutch again, hitting the zombie in the back of the head. It goes down. Jodi says you gotta hit them in the back of the head. She got lucky and figured it out. The intercom comes on. The principal tells everyone the buses have arrived and everyone should report to the loading zone. Cynthia and Jodi head for the door, carrying the crutches with them. They leave.
The senior and junior football teams participate in their first period practice. Coach Conrad watches over them, whistle in his mouth, at the ready. Key players are Randall Floyd, Benny O’Donnell, Beuter Perkins, and Melvin Spivey.
O’Donnell snaps the ball to Floyd, who drops back. He throws a thirty-yard dart to Beuter, who streaks down the sideline for a score. The offense celebrates. Conrad tells them to run it again. He blows the whistle and the offense and defense line up again.
They run the same play. Randall drops back to pass. A zombie bites his throwing hand and Randall drops the ball. Benny thinks it’s a fumble and jumps on the ball. Several zombies pile on to of him, tearing the flesh from his arm. Beuter and Melvin are out on pass routes. They see the zombies.
Melvin and Beuter run towards the end zone and the exit. Coach Conrad blows his whistle until he’s also overcome by zombies. Melvin and Beuter make to the exit unharmed. The rest of the team are overcome by zombies, and become zombies themselves.
Several groups of students move quickly and quality across the back sidewalk, staying out of sight of any zombies. A few teachers and a security guard, Perez, escort them. Three zombies come at them from out of the school. One of the teachers, Ms. Wagner, steps between the students and the zombies. She calls Perez's name.
Perez pulls his gun from the holster. He fires off three shots. All three hit zombies in the head. The bullets do nothing and the zombies keep coming. He complains that a head shot should've worked. Glen says that's only in the movies, that to kill real zombies, you have to shoot them in the heart. Perez tries it and it works. Ms. Wagner hurries them onto the bus.
Melvin and Beuter arrive, still in their football uniforms. Melvin still wears his helmet. Beuter ditches his. Suddenly the school mascot, the wolf, emerges from a hallway and runs straight at the students. They don’t notice that he’s a zombie. Many of the girls--and a few of the boys--scream. The wolf snarls and it is very clearly a zombie. Melvin steps forward, in front of a brick pillar. He yells at the wolf.
The wolf focuses on Melvin and makes a beeline towards him. It leaps into the air. Melvin ducks low and slams his hands into the beast’s stomach, propelling the wolf into the column. It tries to duck out of the way, but that only leads to it smashing into the column, the base of its’ neck taking the brunt of the collision. The zombie falls to the ground, incapacitated. A bunch of the kids surround Melvin, thanking him and talking with awe about what they just saw. Ms. Wagner hurries them along. She nervously eyes the wolf and runs after the students.
The students reach the buses. A large group of zombies approaches from the other direction. A number of students scream, and the hesitate to keep moving towards the buses. Notably, the girl from the library has her crutches back. She gets on the second bus. Ms. Wagner hurries them along. The teens are encouraged by Ms. Wagner and they run for the buses. The three drivers open the doors and the teachers hurry the students on board. Perez steps in front of the kids, next to the first bus.
A male teacher, Laimbeer, brings out a milk crate filled with unlit Molotov cocktails. By now, all the kids are on the buses. Glen, Walt, Cynthia, Jodi, Melvin and Beuter are all on the third bus.
Laimbeer lights one of the Molotov cocktails and throws it at the oncoming zombies. It explodes, tearing apart several zombies and knocking others down. A zombie bites Perez and he falls, shooting a hole in the gas tank of the second bus. Gas pours all over the ground. Laimbeer doesn’t see Perez, so he lights another Molotov cocktail. He holds it up, ready to throw. A zombie bites him on the neck. His throw goes awry and lands in the puddle of gas. It lights up, then the flame follows the leak back to the bus. It explodes. Everyone dies on the second bus. The shrapnel from the explosion destroys the tires on the first bus. The back end of the bus lurches downward. The back door falls open. Zombies rush aboard the bus and start killing the children.
On the third bus, Cynthia steps up beside Tony. She tells him to drive. He maneuvers the bus around the flaming wreck carefully. He has to go slow, and zombies start banging on either side of the bus. Tony has to run over several zombies to get clear of the other buses. It’s slow going and the kids inside the bus are starting to freak out. Tony pulls the bus onto the street.
The wolf, now awake, flees from the fire. He floors it and escapes the zombies, who go back to the damaged, flaming bus area. The fire has spread to the other bus and the wooden parts of the bus loading zone. It’s spreading towards the school. Tony drives through the city, which is still relatively quiet. For now.
At the mall, Francine stares at the dog, making sure it doesn’t come back for more. Once she’s sure it isn’t waking up, she turns to leave. And runs into a zombie who just left the pet store She screams. The zombie grabs he and tries to bite her. She pulls away, backing towards the entrance to a bakery. Francine yells for help.
A baker, Charlie, comes out of the bakery, carrying a cream pie and a rolling pin. He smashes the pie into the zombie’s face, distracting it. It lets go of Francine. Charlie smashes the zombie with the rolling pin, hitting it at the base of its skull. The zombie goes down and stops moving.
Francine thanks Charlie for saving her life. Francine sees more zombies emerging from the pet store. She asks if he has any more pies. Charlie is puzzled. She points. He turns and looks at the zombies. He throws the rolling pin harmlessly at the zombies. They turn and run. Zombies chase them through the mall. They arrive at the front door, well ahead of the zombies. They pause to make a plan. She asks where his car is. He said his roommate dropped hm off. She says they'll take her car. She pulls out her keys and grabs hold of the door. The zombies from inside the mall moan and make sounds as they get closer. Charlie looks back. He says they're almost out of time.
She opens the door and rushes outside. Charlie follows. The door closes behind them and the zombies are delayed, trying to open it. Francine runs surprisingly fast. Charlie has trouble keeping up. A zombie steps in front of them. Francine steps to the side and swings the umbrella and hits the zombie on the base of its skull. The zombies goes down. Francine doesn’t slow down. She makes it to her car an unlocks it. She pauses and looks to see if Charlie is going to make it. He’s close. Francine gets in and starts the car. She waits for Charlie to get in, then speeds away. Once they’re out of the parking lot, she calls Walt. The phone rings a few times, then he answers. Chaos reigns in the background behind him. They each check on the other's safety. He tells her about the trauma they wen through. She asks if he knows what's happening. He says yeah, they had an assembly. She asks if he's headed home. He says yes. They hang up. She drives faster.
The bus has stopped in front of a blue two-story suburban home. Four TEENS stand near the front of the bus, backpacks on. Tony and Cynthia scan the area outside for zombies. Tony asks the kids if they have their keys ready. Nods and fearful mumbles to the affirmative. Cynthia says it's clear. Tony opens the door and tells them to go. The students rush off the bus. Two head right for the front door of the blue house. The others split off for two nearby homes. Tony shuts the door. Everyone watches the students run. No zombies show up. All four students make it home safely.
The bus stops at an intersection and Tony repeats the procedure, letting another seven students get off. No zombies come and everyone’s safe.
Tony continues to weave the bus between abandoned cars and human remains. Only Walt, Glen, Beuter, Melvin, Jodi and Cynthia are left on the bus.
Tony notes that this all happened before? Like 15 years ago or so. Walt doesn't remember, but Glen told him about it. The first time, it was just a Southern thing. Atlanta got hit hard. Most of their parents were involved. Zombies killed Glen's mother. She went to get the cure and several of them bit her. His father moved to New York for work. Tony says the only way to stop the zombies is a bullet or a knife to the heart. But if you don’t want to kill them, you can knock them out with a strong blow to the back of the head, near the base of the skull.
More importantly, though, there is a cure. Yeah, there’s one ingredient. You can only find it in Homosassa Springs, Florida. That’s the only place in the world where manatees live in nature. They realize they're gonna have to go to Florida. It's the only way to save their families and everyone else. But first, they need to meet Dr. Morgan.
Tony drives the bus down a suburban street. He confirms they all live in the same area. They say yes because Glen is staying at Walt's and Jodi is staying with Beuter. They drive past a police car, sitting in the middle of the road. The lights are swirling and the front doors have been left open. Jodi asks where the cops are. Everyone looks around for the cops Beuter is the first to see them. He points them out. Two police officers are crouched down, eating the flesh from several pedestrians. Cynthia vomits out the window. The window only opens halfway, so the vomit splashes all over the glass. Walt and Glen look at the window and frown. Walt asks why they aren't giving chase in their cars. Glen says the infected can't drive.
Tony says they'll give chase, but they can't keep up and will lose interest. The students look out the back window to watch the zombies recede from sight. Tony pulls the bus into the cul-de-sac. The houses here are large and expensive. He parks closest to Walt’s house and everyone gets off the bus. They head towards Walt’s house. A two-story brick building.
Walt and Glen lead the others into Walt’s house. Walt calls out for his dad. No answer. Melvin suggests they evacuated. Walt says no, he talked to his parents on the phone earlier. He goes upstairs. Cynthia chides Melvin for being insensitive.
Cynthia walks into the living room, which has a 70” flat screen and numerous gaming consoles with all the peripherals. Cynthia asks what it all is. Walt says Glen is going to be a professional gamer. He’s already won some tournaments. He’s won more than $20,000. Glen returns and says his dad made me put in a trust. He can’t get any of it until he turns 18. Cynthia says she's terrible at video games. Glen says he could teach her. She says that sounds fun. Melvin hurries them, wanting to get to his house.
The group runs from Walt’s house to Beuter’s house. Something moves in the back yard at Glen’s house. A zombie emerges. It follows the students towards Beuter’s house. They don’t see it and go inside.
Beuter and Jodi lead the group inside. Beuter cups his hand around his mouth and yells "Roll Tide!" Cynthia, Glen and Walt stare at him. Jodi sees and steps in, almost apologetically, explaining that's how Beuter's family says hey. Because of Alabama. Glen and Walt nod as if they know what she’s talking about. They don’t. They exchange a confused look that Jodi doesn’t see. Beuter goes to get his gun. His parents are on a hunting trip. Jodi's parents are probably at her house, which is like a bunker. Her father was a long-haul truck driver. He was in a crash. He had to retire because of the injuries. But it meant he was at home a lot more. He even taught her how to drive those big rigs.
Beuter walks in holding a hunting rifle. Cynthia asks if he can shoot it. He says not really, his dad tried to teach him, but he couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn. Glen knows how to shoot, having learned from video games. Beuter says that doesn't count. Glen says he hopes they don’t get to a point where he has to show them. If so, they’re gonna be in trouble. Beuter takes it as an insult, but Jodi calms him. Both Glen and Beuter turn to glare at her. Then all three burst into laughter. Cynthia calls them out for laughter, when some of them still have missing parents. They all turn and look at her gravely. Cynthia muses that they have to go to Florida. The prospect excites no one.
The group runs from Beuter’s house to Melvin’s house. He unlocks the door and lets them in. The zombie sees them and follows. Melvin leads everyone into his house. He says his parents are supposed to be at work. Melvin explains why his family hates guns. He opens a closet in the front hall and pulls out an aluminum baseball bat. Beuter grins. He says he wouldn't want to be hit by Melvin, who's on the wrestling team. Melvin notes it is the District Champion Weightlifting team. Beuter and Walt chuckle.
Melvin leads everyone out of his house. He still wears his helmet, but he otherwise wears head-to-toe camouflage with long sleeves and black leather gloves. He carries the bat. Beuter follows with the hunting rifle. Glen and the others follow quietly. The zombie that was following them has finally caught up and blocks their path forward. Walt tells Beuter to shoot it. Beuter kneels on one knee and aims the rifle. He pulls the trigger. The shot goes wide. Jody and Cynthia tell him to try again. Beuter aims longer and more carefully. He pulls the trigger.
The bullet whizzes past the zombie’s head. A tuft of its hair flutters in the breeze, but it misses. Glen grabs the rifle. Beuter doesn’t let go at first. Glen stares him down. He lets go of the gun. Glen aims. He fires. The zombie falls dead. Glen hands the rifle back to Beuter and head towards Cynthia’s house.
Cynthia leads everyone inside her house. Jodi asks if Cynthia's parents are home. She doesn't know. She called earlier, but never got through. Cynthia walks room-to-room. Looking for parents. They aren’t anywhere on the first floor. Cynthia goes to the stairs and climbs the first two. She calls out to her parents. No answer. Cynthia notes her father is a reporter. That’s where she gets it from. Her mother is a college professor. Philosophy. She questions everything. Glen notes that's where she gets THAT from. Jodi says it's cool Cynthia is so much like her parents.
Melvin wants to leave. Walt asks where they would go. Cynthia reminds them that Tony said there was a doctor they should meet. Beuter questions leaving. Melvin says they don't want to run into family members or neighbors who have turned into zombies. Glen agrees. He heads towards the front door and goes outside. The others look at each other, unsure of what to do. Cynthia follows Greg. Then Melvin. Then the others. Everyone goes back outside.
They head to the bus and Tony opens the door. Cynthia is the first teen back on the bus. Cynthia asks Tony how he's doing. He says it's been relatively quiet, except for that little scuffle they had. The rest of the group gets on the bus. Tony shuts the door and drives around the cul-de-sac and onto the suburban streets. He says they need to go see the doctor.
He steps on the gas. They pass a group of zombies that briefly give chase. Looking out the window, Melvin sees his parents, Caroline and Willard, among the zombies. They’ve been turned. He says damn and puts his hand on the glass. Others ask and he points them out. Cynthia is shocked, but she holds it together for Melvin. They stare at Melvin’s parents as they recede into the distance. The bus drives on.
Tony drives through the city, which looks like a war zone. Buildings are on fire, cars are crashed, sirens wail. Dead bodies are strewn across the landscape. Things grow quiet for a while. A car explodes near the road, shocking everyone on the bus. Things quiet down again after that. They continue on in silence. Eventually, they arrive at a house and small office in front of a warehouse. Tony parks the bus and everyone gets off.
As the students approach the front door, Dr. Morgan, opens the door to greet them. They go inside. Dr. Morgan is last. He looks around to see if anyone sees them, then goes inside. He locks the door behind him.
Dr. Morgan gestures for everyone to sit down. The office has several couches and chairs. Once everyone is seated, Dr. Morgan settles into the chair behind his desk. He asks if they know what's going on in the world. Cynthia says yes. Morgan asks if they know about the first time. Glen says yes. Morgan asks if they know about the cure. Jodi says kinda. Morgan tells them to follow him. Morgan walks out the back door. The teens follow.
Morgan leads the group into his warehouse. He says the warehouse is the solution to the zombie problem. He shows them rack after rack of guns that fire darts that hold empty glass cylinders. Melvin asks what they are. Morgan says they are thousands of delivery system guns with a range of a few feet. When someone gets hit with one of these darts, the virus dies and the host is cured. The catch is he doesn't have the vaccine, only the guns. The vaccine can only be found in manatee urine. Melvin an Beuter burst into laughter. The others grin. Dr. Morgan says it’s no laughing matter. Cynthia apologize and shushes the others. Walt asks why the authorities aren't involved? Tony says none of them believe it happened before and they can’t be seen as wrong by the public. So they just ignore it. Glen says that elected officials aren’t better than the public on anything but raising money and getting elected. Melvin agrees. Tony says most of them are just plain stupid. All this is why the students have to go get the cure and bring it back. No one else is gonna do it. Tony can't take them because he has heart problems and can't handle the trip. He says that he has to go home after he drops them off. The students let Tony’s impending departure sit with them.
Francine pulls her car into the driveway. She and Charlie look around for zombies, but the coast is clear. They get out and run for the front door. Francine unlocks it and they rush inside. Once inside the house, Francine locks the front door. And she uses a chair to brace the front door. And she blocks the front window with a bookcase. She makes sure the windows on the first floor are all locked and the curtains closed. Francine checks the lock on the back door. It’s engaged. Finally, she plops down on the couch, exhausted. Charlie sits in a chair. She tells him to help himself to whatever is in the fridge. Charlie gets up and walks into the kitchen. Francine pulls out her phone. She dials Walt again. There’s no answer. Charlie walks back in carrying two open beers. He hands one to Francine and sits down with the other. Francine hangs up the phone and takes a sip of her beer.
Dr. Morgan leads the group to his house, which is next to his office, in front of the warehouse. A combination howl and snarl comes from not too far away. Dr. Morgan says it's the infected trying to speak. He hurries them inside. He says they should stay at his house tonight and leave in the morning. Tony departs. They hug him and thank him. The others mumble their thanks. A tear runs down Tony’s cheek. He turns and leaves. He looks back and gives them a final wave. Dr. Morgan shuts the door behind him and locks it. He closes the shade on the door’s window.
Francine and Charlie sit on the couch, drinking and laughing. Francine joins in him in laughter. She hears a scraping sound at the front door. She tells him to quiet down. She moves towards the front door. She pulls the curtain over the front door’s window. Charlie stands and readies to act. Francine is staring eye-to-eye with Marty, her husband. He’s a zombie. She freezes. Marty continues to try to get inside. Marty smashes the glass and grabs Francine. She screams. Charlie rushes to help her. He brings his fists together and smashes them down on Marty’s head and he lets her go. Marty grabs Charlie and rips his throat out with his teeth. Charlie falls to the ground. He’s gonna die, he’s not gonna be a zombie. Francine smashes a lamp on the back of Marty’s head and he falls back out the window and onto the front porch. Incapacitated.
Dr. Morgan has cleared out his living room and he’s provided blankets and pillows for everyone to sleep on the floor. The teens are spread out on the floor. Jodi and Beuter snuggle. Glen and Cynthia are next to each other. Dr. Morgan sits in a chair. He asks if they're all from the area. Cynthia says they are. Dr. Morgan asks if any of them have been to Florida. Glen, Jodi, Melvin and Beuter have.
Dr. Morgan tells them all to introduce themselves and tell what they bring to the mission. Cynthia says she's senior class president and editor-in-chief of the Necronomicon, the school’s literary magazine. She's smart and has great leadership skills. Glen and Jodi agree. Melvin is the starting tailback for the football team. He had more than 1400 yards as a junior and was on pace to eclipse that this season. For his career, he has 44 touchdowns. He's signed with Georgia next year. All that means he's fast and strong and has top-notch problem-solving skills.
Jodi hates talking about herself. She's a cheerleader, and a good one, so she's pretty athletic. She figured out on her own about the zombies’ weak spot on the back of their neck, so she's pretty smart, too. Beuter is a receiver, so he's I’m fast. Melvin agrees. Beuter says he's also good with his hands. Jodi agrees. Cynthia blushes. Walt says he's not really good at much. Cynthia presses him. Glen sets an example by saying he's seen every horror movie ever. Walt is upset Glen watched Troll 2 without him. Glen says he's the best shooter among the group. He has also studied the previous outbreak. He knows everything there is to know about the zombies.
Dr. Morgan heads to sleep. The students murmur their good night wishes. Dr, Morgan tells them not to stay up too late. Dr. Morgan goes into his bedroom and shuts the door behind him.
Cynthia says they should listen to Dr Morgan. Melvin says they should listen to Captain Morgan. He holds up a bottle of spiced rum. Everyone breaks into cheers except Cynthia and Glen. Glen tells them to keep it quiet. Beuter reaches for the rum. Melvin hands it to him. Beuter opens the bottle and takes a swallow. Cynthia is grossed out and tells him to use a cup. Jodi says she'll get them. I’ll get them. She stands and walks to the kitchen. She comes back with plastic cups for everyone and hands them out. Beuter fills up his cup and gives the bottle back to Melvin. Melvin fills his cup then passes it around. Cynthia only pours a little bit and she seems embarrassed to be drinking.
Walt walks out of the room and calls his mom. She asks where he is. He says they're going to get the cure. She asks who and he tells her. She asks about an adult and he dodges the answer. She asks where they're going and he says Homosassa Springs. She asks why they have to go and he says because no one else will. She tells him to be safe and quick. She tells him she saw his father. He's a zombie and is locked in the basement. They say they love each other. Walt hangs up and rejoins the other students. Glen asks Walt if everything is okay. Walt tells Glen his father is a zombie. He says they need to get the cure. Cynthia says they will.
Melvin asks everyone what as a reward when this is all over. Glen wants them to pay for college. Walt wants a Ferrari and a date with a playmate. Cynthia wants them to give her a job. Melvin says LeBron spends $1.5 million a year to maintain his physique. Melvin doesn’t care about the money, he just wants access to that type of health regime. With that, he’d be guaranteed to make the NFL. Walt says it sounds like steroids. Melvin gets annoyed as says it's totally legal. Jodi says she wants a big house. Tax-free. And a trip to Barbados. Beuter says he doesn’t know, he hasn’t really thought about it. Jodi looks at him sharply. She knows he’s holding back the truth. She doesn’t say anything.
The teens are all packed into Dr. Morgan’s land rover. Melvin is driving. The windows are down and Dr. Morgan stands next to the driver’s window. He tells them that as long as phones keep working, they have his number. Cynthia thanks him. Dr. Morgan says they need to go to the Dekalb History Center Museum in Decatur. They’ll meet a man, Kevin Pickford. He’ll be their guide to Homosassa Springs. Jodi asks if Kevin is a chaperone. Dr. Morgan says he'd be remiss in his community duties if he sent them to Florida unattended.
A group of zombies emerges from a side street and moves toward them. Dr. Morgan tells them they’d better get going. They’ve got company. He points towards the herd. Everyone rolls up the windows except Melvin. Dr. Morgan tells them to be careful. Melvin returns the admonition. Dr. Morgan heads for the house. Melvin rolls up the window and drives away.
Melvin drives. He has to navigate abandoned cars and random zombies. The zombies give chase as the land rover passes, but Melvin outruns them. He swerves bout of the way to avoid a zombie. Beuter says he should just hit ‘em. They’re just zombies. Cynthia says you can’t kill them unless you have no other choice. She says they can be cured and come back. Beuter presses but Melvin says parents are zombies. If anyone kills them, he'll get revenge. He stares Beuter down. Beuter looks away. Walt makes fun of Beuter's inaccurate shooting. Everyone laughs. Except Beuter. He’s angry.
Melvin pulls the land rover up in front of the Dekalb History Center Museum. He parks and every one gets out. Several zombies move towards them. Kevin Pickford steps out of the museum, holding a hunting rifle. Kevin introduces himself and says Dr. Morgan told him they were coming. He looks around nervously. Kevin says they gotta get inside, where they can talk safely. The area is crawling with zombies. They follow him inside.
Inside, They stand together closely, concluding the last handshake of greeting. Kevin asks if the gig is to guide them to Homosassa Springs so they can save the world using Manatee piss. The students all laugh. Cynthia and Glen both laugh too loud. They turn to look at each other. They meet eyes. They turn away, blushing. Melvin tells Kevin that’s it, when you get down to it. The others nod. Kevin asks if they have room or need to acquire a vehicle. Walt says they have room.
Kevin leads them outside. Everyone follows. Cynthia is last. She frowns. She’s not sure they CAN make it work.
Later, Melvin pulls the land rover into a truck stop and parks in front of the door. He says they should get some snacks and drinks, hit the head, then hit the road. Everyone gets out of the land rover and heads inside. They don’t see the masked men hiding behind the truck stop. Walt and Jodi bond over the fact that it's a Chick-ee’s. They’re giddy. The run and hop through the still-working electronic doors. Glen and Beuter don't get the Chick-ee worship. Everyone goes inside.
The students spread out inside the store, each looking for different treasures. The store has been a looted a little bit, but only with targeted items. They’re out of Cheetos, for instance. Most items are still in stock. Everyone goes searching for their favorites. Glen and Walt hit the candy aisle. They grab everything. Walt goes looking elsewhere.
Beuter grabs a beer. Jodi grabs a coconut water. Cynthia tries to find healthy chips. She settles on Sun Chips. Kevin gets a bottled water and some turkey jerky. Melvin goes to the doughnut case and starts sampling, taking a single bite from each doughnut of a different flavor. Walt wanders toward the door to the back of the store.
He opens the door and a stream of zombies floods into the store. Walt backs away quickly. Cynthia looks up and sees the zombies. She screams. The zombies crowd the students away from the front door, trapping them in the store. They look around to improvise weapons and don’t see much. Melvin grabs a mop stomps on the end of it. It breaks off with a jagged end. He hefts it, poking at the zombies to keep them away. They aren’t intimidated and keep advancing. Others grab bottles and cans, anything they can throw that might do damage. Walt surveys the pitiful selection of weapons.
The zombies move closer. Suddenly, the front door opens and in rush the Raiders. They are all dressed in silver and black football jerseys. Knock of Raiders jerseys adopted by a high school football team. The front of the jerseys all say “Redan Raiders.” The back has a number and a name. The are Clint Bruno, Cliff, Griff, Whiff, Stiff, and Niles. Niles wears a yellow and blue “Rams” jersey, instead of a Raiders jersey. The six Raiders are armed with automatic weapons. They open fire on the zombies, careful not to hit the students. Soon the zombies are all dead. Beuter, Jodi and Melvin are thankful. Cynthia is horrified.
Walt asks who they are. Clint says they’re the Raiders. And the students are under arrest. Beuter says they aren’t cops. The Raiders point their weapons at the students. Clint says they are now. Cynthia and Glen look at each other with concern. Whiff and Stiff move to bind the students with zip ties. Melvin moves to resist. Griff puts a gun to his head and Melvin stops resisting. Clint explains why they're gonna be locked up. On October 8 of last year, the undefeated Redan High School Raiders faced the Druid Hill High Red Devils on the football field. Beuter recognizes him. Clint says he's played a big part in crushing their dreams. If we had won that game, we would’ve taken Lee County’s spot in the state playoffs. With our whole team were healthy, we would’ve stormed through those playoffs and we would’ve all gotten scholarships to good colleges who would’ve properly developed us and several of us would’ve made it to the NFL. Clint accuses them of cheating. Melvin denies it. Clint punches Melvin in the stomach. He doubles over with pain. Clint says they want revenge. He says it was God’s will that they walked into the trap. It’ll be God’s will what they do next and says to load them in the van. The other Raiders escort the students outside. Clint orders somebody get all these Hostess Cakes. Jay pulls out a pillow case and starts stuffing the Hostess Cakes inside. The Raiders load the students into the back of the fan. Kevin breaks free and makes a break for it. Griff points his automatic rifle at Kevin. Kevin keeps running, his hands zip-tied behind him. Cliff steps in front of Griff. Cliff pulls a revolver from his pocket and aims at Kevin. He pulls the trigger and hits Kevin. He falls to the ground, dead. Cliff turns to the other students and tells them that’s what they get if they run. He glares at Melvin and Beuter in particular. Cliff waves at the Raiders to keep loading the students. They do. Cliff gets in the van’s drivers seat. One of the other Raiders drives the students’ Land Rover.
Redan High School is a two-story building with no windows. The Raiders march the teens inside. Everyone’s hands are zip tied. Clint brags that the school building has no windows. He squeezes Jodi's breast. Beuter and Melvin get upset and struggle in an attempt to assault Clint. Several Raiders push them back and knock them down. The Raiders hold them down. Beuter spits on the sidewalk in front of the school. One of the Raiders smacks him in the back of his head. Clint tells him he'll regret that. Melvin talks shit. The Raiders stand the students up and force them inside.
The teens are seated in a line against the wall of a classroom, still in the zip ties. None of the Raiders are in the room. Half the room is filled with boxes of various types of liquor, including a few clearly marked “Everclear.” Beuter and Jodi each pull out pocket knives and cut each other’s zip ties. Once they’re free, they cut everyone else free. Walt asks what they're gonna do now. Cynthia has an idea. They all turn to look at her. She holds up a bottle of Everclear. She says they can make Molotov cocktails. The teens move slowly out of the classroom. They can hear the Raiders partying in the nearby cafeteria. They quietly make their way to the front office. Once inside, Beuter and Melvin block the front door.
Cynthia tells them to find a microphone. One that’s connected to the intercom. She points to the speakers strategically hung throughout the office. In a smaller office, Glen finds the intercom. She tells them to find music. Glen finds it. He leans out of the office and waves everyone over. Cynthia pokes her head in the office. She smiles when she sees the boombox and stack of CDs. Cynthia explains CDs. The others peek into the office. Cynthia tells them to pick out the most jarring, annoying music they can. Jodi joins Walt and Glen and they look through the stack of CDs. They’ve been sitting out a long time and the jewel cases are dusty. They talk about the fall of infrastructure. Everybody pulls out their phones and checks them. Everything is still working. They let out a collective sigh of relief. Cynthia sees the keys sitting on the counter. She grabs them and holds them up. Cynthia tells them to lock the door. Melvin does it. He grabs the keys and heads towards the front door. He starts trying out the many keys on the ring. Walt and Glen keep searching through the CDs. Walt grins like a fool. He holds up a Spice Girls CD. He says to play track 1 on repeat. Glen takes the CD and checks the track listing. Track 1 is “Wannabe.” He grins. Glen takes the CD and puts it in the boombox. He brings it to the intercom mic. Cynthia rigs the mic to stay on. Glen hits play and Spice Girls, “Wannabe,” plays on repeat. Melvin and Beuter move a bookshelf in front of the locked door, reinforcing the barrier. Zombies hear the sound and are drawn to the school. They can open the door and they do. The zombies flood through the door.
Cynthia steps out of the office. She calls Melvin and he comes closer. She asks if he can break a window. She points toward a window in the office. He thinks so. She says that's their exit. The Raiders start trying to break down the office door. They threaten the students. They keep banging on the door. Melvin gets ready to smash the window with his bat. Glen pushes him aside. Glen raises the rifle and points at the window. Melvin steps out of the way. Glen shoots the window. It shatters. He uses the bat to clear the glass away. The zombies enter the hallway and the Raiders start screaming and shooting. The students can’t see what’s happening to the Raiders. Melvin is first out the window, followed by Beuter, then the other boys. Cynthia goes last. The students rush outside. They see their land rover parked next to the Raiders’ van and other cars. They get inside. Melvin grabs his bat and gives it a kiss. Glen takes the rifle, then looks at Beuter for approval. Beuter nods.
Melvin drives along a highway. He sees the ramp to I-75 South and takes it. There are a few lone zombies on the road, but easy enough for Melvin to avoid. A family of zombie deer run onto the highway. They freeze when they see the land rover. Melvin slows down and honks the horn. The deer are spooked and run off. Cynthia and Glen exchange a look of wonder. Otherwise, they see no humans or animals, nothing in Southern Georgia seems to have survived. They pass a sign that says Florida is 31 miles away. Someone’s phone rings. Everyone looks around to see whose it is. They all turn to look at Jodi. She answers the phone. It's her parents. She tells them she's not coming home tonight. She knows where the cure is. They resist, but she says she's 18. She's going. She hangs up. Beuter asks if she's okay. She says her parents are just worried. Paranoid, even. He hugs her. Jodi stares out the window, solemn.
Cynthia asks what were all of them were planning on doing next year? Walt asks why they'd want to do that. Cynthia says if they have a future to look forward to, it’ll spur them to keep going. Walt is skeptical. Glen says he's gonna go to film school and learn how to write and direct horror movies. Cynthia is going to major in political science. Then law school. Then run for Congress. She wants to work her way up to the White House. Beuter says he's gonna play college ball, hopefully at University of Georgia or Alabama. Get some All-American to throw him the ball and that’ll give me a shot at pro ball. Melvin says he's gonna be a first-round draft pick. Then he wants it all: rushing titles, Superbowls, All-Pro, Hall of Fame. He's gonna change the game. Jodi shrugs. She doesn't know what she wants to do yet. Walt isn't sure, either. He's heard good things about USPS. He thinks he could be okay being a postman. People nod in silence. Lots of deep thinking going on.
Beuter takes a turn driving. He cruises South on I-75 as fast as he can. They take the next exit and pull into a Suwanee Swifty gas station. Beuter tells everyone to look, they don’t want any surprises like last time. They all get out and fan out to look around the building. From inside the gas station, someone fires half a dozen shots from a .44 Magnum. Everyone ducks for cover. The shots fly over them, hitting the land rover harmlessly. They scramble to get back in the land rover. Once everyone is in the land rover, Beuter backs out quickly. Another shot from the store. Beuter drives off as fast as he can.
From the outside of the land rover, a hole leaks gasoline that splashes onto the blacktop. Inside, Beuter sees the gas gauge rapidly approaching empty. He taps on it and frowns when it keeps going down. Beuter tells everyone they have a leak. Melvin says they need to stop anyway. He points at something in the road in front of them. Everyone turns to look. Everyone continues to stare as the land rover rolls to a stop. What they see is a mass of human bodies. Naked in a heap. Their flesh is meshing together, making one large organism.
Walt says he saw something like it in this disgusting movie called ‘Society.’ The rich people fuse together into a hive like that. He nods towards the hive. And they eat the poor people. At that moment, the hive lets forth a war cry, a haunting, echo-ey sound, almost a war cry. It hurts the ears of any human that hears it. They duck their heads and cover their ears until it stops. Walt leans forward and vomits on the floor of the land rover. Everyone freaks out and flees from the car. The hive lets out another war cry. Everyone covers their ears again. Cynthia says they have to get away from that thing! She points at the hive. She runs towards the nearest exit, towards as Live Oak. The others run after her. The hive follows slowly.
It’s dark outside and the teens arrive at a rest stop on foot. Cynthia tells them to check around the outside of the building. Cynthia goes one way around the building. Melvin goes the other. Beuter and Jodi follow Melvin. The others follow Cynthia. Glen slowly follows, a frown on his face.
Everyone sits around, eating and drinking. Some are already in their sleeping bags. Others sit in chairs. Melvin and Beuter block the doors then sit down with the others. Devin limps into the main room from the back office. Melvin grabs his bat. Beuter grabs the rifle. They each take a step towards Devin. Devin puts his hands up in a disarming gesture. He limps forward. He wears shorts and they can see that his left calf is bandaged. Devin says he's friendly! Beuter lowers the rifle. Melvin relaxes his posture. The others sigh with relief. Beuter asks who he is. Melvin asks where he comes from. Their weapons are ready for attack. I’m Devin. I’m a guide at Gator City. They stare at him. He says he was a guide at Gator City before the zombies. He says he needs a ride out of Florida. He limps forward and shows off his leg, which is heavily bandaged. He says it's an alligator bite. Beuter lifts his rifle and aims it at Devin. Devin puts his hands up in a defensive posture. He says if it was a zombie, he would've already changed. Beuter lowers his gun.
They hear the familiar war cry of the hive outside. Then it’s joined by a second and a third. Devin limps closer to the group. Melvin and Cynthia move closer to the front to look outside. They see a hive blocking the doorway. Jodi goes towards the rear exit. There's another hive. Walt moves a little closer to the third exit, on the side. One blocks that exit, too. Cynthia says they’ll have to go up to the roof. Devin says he has something that will help. He pulls a crossbow with wire coiled up and attached to a loaded bolt. Cynthia heads for the roof. The others follow.
The teens stand on top of the building. Walt looks over the side and sees several hives. They’re starting to merge. Devin steps up to the edge of the roof with his crossbow. He aims at a tree well past the hive. He fires. The bolt lodges in the tree and the wire trails behind it. Devin pulls the wire taut and attaches the other end to the wall above the door with a pinion. The wire is taut. He pours a stack of zipline pulleys with handles out of his backpack and hands them out to everyone. Cynthia says it’d be easier if we had a distraction. Beuter unstraps his backpack. He unzips it to show that it’s filled with bottles of Everclear. He asks if those will work. Cynthia smiles at him and says hell, yeah! Beuter hands out the bottles of Everclear. Cynthia tears up rags to top each bottle. Each duo hits one of the hives with two Molotov cocktails: Glen and Cynthia, Walt and Melvin, Jodi and Beuter. The hives emit a high-pitched screech, but they don’t retreat. Devin says they have to go over them. He points to the zipline. Everyone gets their pulley-handles ready and lines up.
Devin says they need a few athletes to go first. They can help the others with their landings. Catch them if necessary. Beuter and Melvin step up. Beuter puts his pulley-handle on the line. Somewhat hesitantly. He looks back at Devin. Devin steps up and checks it and says it's good to go. Beuter hesitantly hangs one foot over the side. He pulls it back. He takes a deep breath. He rocks backward, then leaps off the roof, holding the handle for dear life. Beuter screams as he soars through the air. The others laugh and clap as he lands. Neither the burning hive nor any other zombies approach him. Melvin zips down. Beuter catches him. He tells the others to come on. Jodi takes the zip line. She’s athletic, so she does well. Cynthia is hesitant. Glen braces her by the shoulders and tells her the others will catch her. Melvin and Jodi wave her down. She takes a deep breath and zips to the bottom. She’s a little uneven and uneasy, but Jodi catches her. Walt goes next. He’s wobbly and loses balance. Beuter and Melvin catch him. He’s still wobbly as he walks away. Glen goes down the line quickly. Walt screams. He freezes where he is. A zombie has grabbed him and prepares to bite his neck. Melvin runs over and smashes the zombie in the back of his head with the bat. It drops to the ground. Melvin heads towards the interstate on foot. The others follow.
The teens walk South on I-75. They see the sign that reads “Welcome to Florida, the Sunshine State.” Leading up to the highway, but stopping before the paved road is a 12’ wall. It extends out of sight in the direction of Tallahassee. Construction for the wall to continue to Jacksonville was started, but it appears long-abandoned. Cynthia asks what it is and Devin says it is the “Great Wall of Florida.” He says Governor DeSantis built the wall to keep zombies out and keep Floridians safe. He didn’t finish it and failed at both. A group of heavily armed men stands in the road, near the unfinished wall, border guards. Friendly if they’re lucky. If they're unlucky, they’d already be dead. Walt is shocked into silence.
The leader of the guards holds up a hand, telling the students to halt. He says they are now approaching the sovereign land of Florida, state their business. Cynthia says they’re here to get the ingredients for the cure to the zombie plague. The leader looks at Cynthia with contempt. Then he looks at the rest of the group. He asks if they have an adult he can talk to? Cynthia takes offense. No one answers the leader. He counts the members of the group, pointing a finger at each as he counts. The leader says he can’t let them in. According to Executive Fiat #3, no group that has more men than women may enter the land of Florida. Walt asks if they're fucking kidding. The leader tells him to watch his mouth. They don’t allow that kind of language in Florida. He grips a submachine gun tighter. He tells them to head North to Atlanta, East to Jacksonville, or West to Tallahassee. Your choice. The students start walking East. Devin asks if they're really seeking the cure. Cynthia nods.
The students walk East on I-10. Walt asks what they're gonna do. Cynthia says they’re just gonna walk around them. Glen says they’ll just walk through Lake City and then back over to I-75. It’s getting dark as the teens continue to walk South on I-75. They come to a sign that reads “Gator City Next Exit.” Beyond that, they can see the entrance sign to the wildlife theme park. Walt and Glen get excited, saying that's where they're staying tonight. They rush down the exit ramp.
They approach the front entrance to Gator City. Spray painted over the welcome message, it says “Warning! Keep Out! Or die!” Jodi asks if they're going in. Cynthia, Jodi and Devin warn them against going in. Melvin says they can handle it! Melvin and Beuter rush inside. The others have no choice but to follow.
Melvin and Beuter lead the others through the park. They’re as excited as little kids at the attractions. They pass several enclosures that contain alligators. They act a little aggressive, approach the enclosure’s see-through walls, show their teeth, snap at each other. Glen moves toward an enclosure, to get a closer look. He turns on a flashlight and spotlights it on the zombie gators. The others gasp. Walt says nope, he quits. He turns around and walks away. Cynthia asks what he's doing. He said he didn't sign up for no zombie gators. Glen and Cynthia put their arms around Walt and walk him back to the group. They head away from the zombie gator enclosure and towards the administration building. They all go inside.
Inside, Melvin cooks frozen hot dogs over an open fire. Beuter and Walt have buns and wait for the first cooked dogs. Glen comforts Walt. Beuter and Walt get hot dogs. Then the others line up to get theirs.
The students all sleep in the conference rooms. Everyone’s snug in their sleeping bags. Beuter snores. The sounds of movement can be heard outside. Cynthia wakes up. She listens. She hears the movement outside. Cynthia hears a noise and wakes the others up. She says someone’s outside. Melvin grabs his bat. Glen readies the rifle. They stand at the ready. The sound doesn’t repeat. Eventually, everyone falls asleep again.
The sun pouring through the window gets high enough to shine in Cynthia’s eyes and wake her up. She sits up to stop the glare from hitting her eyes. She gets out of bed and notices movement outside. She rushes to the window to get a closer look. She sees zombie gators openly roaming the park. Inside, she sees Beuter and asks if he sees this. He says he has seen it. He's been up for a while. Those things are everywhere. Cynthia asks what they're gonna do. Beuter shrugs. He says they'll have to wait for the others. Looking outside, Beuter and Cynthia see several cult members standing on the backs of zombie alligators, holding chains that go to collars around the alligator’s necks. They wait.
Later, all the students are awake. They watch as the alligator riders continue to patrol outside the building. Melvin says they’re gonna have to fight the gator-riding fuckers. Glen grabs the rifle and heads for the door. The others grab what weapons they can and follow. The students stand in a circle with their backs facing each other. Alligator riders come at them from both sides. Glen shoots one of the riders and he falls off the alligator. Jodi hits the other with a golf club she found inside. He falls to the ground and is bitten by the alligator he was riding. It rips the rider’s arm off. Melvin bashes each of the zombie gators on the back of the head, killing them. Three more riders rush to attack the students. Numerous zombie gators follow them. Glen fires the rifle twice taking care of two of the riders. Melvin bashes two of the gators. More gators come, some with riders. Other riders approach on foot.
Cynthia says there are too many of them, they've gotta run. The students bunch up towards the exit. Glen shoots another of the riders. Devin screams. The students turn to look and see a gator rip off Devin’s leg. Two of the alligator riders grab Devin and restrain him. He tells them to go save the world. Devin knocks the riders down. The students run towards the Gator City exit. Another gator bites Devin in the face.
The students rush outside, out of breath. Cynthia points to a church. A van sits in the parking lot among the other cars. The students cross the street. Cynthia and Glen go inside to get the keys. The others congregate around the van. They look back at Gator City, but no one is following them. Cynthia and Glen come back outside with the keys. Everyone gets in. Cynthia hands the keys to Beuter, who drives. They exit the parking lot and take the entrance ramp to I-75.
Beuter drives along I-75. I-75 splits off and the road that continues Southwest is I-275. Glen tells him to go the West, where Homosassa Springs is. Beuter continues onto I-275. Beuter is driving South on I-275. Beuter asks where Homosassa Springs is. Glen says he thinks they're in Tampa. Cynthis says they're too far south. They see smoke in the distance. A significant portion of the city is on fire. Beuter tries to get off at the next few exit, but all are blocked by fire. Interstate-275 makes a sharp turn to the West. Jodi asks if they're lost. He says yeah and tells them to check their phone. Jodi checks hers. No signal. Cynthia checks hers. Nothing. Glen checks his. No signal. Walt checks his. Nothing. Beuter says he can't drive blind so someone else should take over. Beuter pulls over to the side of the road and jumps out. Melvin gets out and they switch places. They get it. Melvin drives away.
Melvin drives west on I-275. He says they need gas. Melvin pulls off the highway when he sees a gas station. He slowly pulls through as they all gawk at the fire. Everything burns, even the gas pumps. Melvin pulls back on to the highway. A series of shots: Melvin driving down the highway. The group gawking as they pass another burning gas station. Melvin turning off I-275 to State Road 668. Melvin drives past a sign that says “Homosassa Springs.” It points to the north. Melvin driving on to U.S. 19 North. Melvin driving, swerving around parked cars. A close-up of the gas gauge, which is nearly empty. The gas light comes on.
Melvin pulls off the highway towards a gas station and roadside stand. A sign outside says “Free Disney & Busch Gardens tickets. Melvin pulls up to a gas pump and parks. He gets out to pump gas. The others get out and stretch. Two time share presenters, Biff and Mimi, step out of the building. They hold guns on the students. They welcome them. The students look up at the presenters. They put their hands up. He tells them to put their hands down. They swear they aren't violent. Jodi says they're just here for gas. And a map. Biff waves the students inside with the pistol. Mimi says it's for a presentation. Biff nods and waves them toward the building again. The students trudge towards the building. The students sit through the world’s last time share presentation. At gunpoint. The students applaud the presenters, which makes them smile. Mimi asks if they're interested in buying a timeshare. The students stare at the presenters, assuming they are joking. Walt says they're all in high school. Jodi adds that they're too young. Cynthia laments their lack of money. Biff and Mimi frown. Their shoulders slump. Biff tells them to get out of there. He throws a map to Cynthia and waves them away. The students stand up and move towards the exit. The students look back with fear as they leave. The students head towards the van. Cynthia flinches when a pair of gunshots go off inside.
Beuter sits in the passenger seat examining the map. He says go north. Melvin pulls onto U.S. 19. Beuter says Homosassa Springs looks to be about 70 miles to go. Melvin drives north. As they drive North, they come across several groups of zombies. Beuter says they should find somewhere to hole up for the night. Beuter drives a bit further to get away from the zombies. They pass a city limits sign for New Port Richey. Beuter pulls into the Walmart Supercenter parking lot and parks as close as he can to the door. They get out of the van and go inside the Supercenter. The students fan out once they're inside the Wal-Mart. Cynthia says to keep their eyes peeled. They have no idea how many zombies are in here. Beuter grabs a box of Tiki torches and starts handing them out. He tells them to herd the zombies into the freezer. They start rounding up the zombies. Beuter and Melvin herd the last of the zombies into the freezer. It’s a zombie family: the father wearing a camouflage shirt and hat, the mother wearing a Florida Gators sweatshirt, and two sons also wearing camo shirts. They all wear jeans. One of the boys tries to bite Beuter, but he and Melvin gently herd them into the freezer. Melvin puts a lock on the door. He yells out to the store.
The students go crazy raiding the shelves and coolers for food.
Jodi rolls over and pulls herself free from her blanket. The cool air wakes her up. She looks around for Beuter. She finds him at the front door, drinking a beer and watching the highway.
Jodi asks if they’ll be able to hit the road soon? Beuter stands up with a hop. He says they should stock up on supplies. Wake everybody up. She walks towards the sleeping area. Beuter continues, suggesting lanterns, a kerosene stove, camping gear, the whole nine yards, too. She goes to tell the others. He heads to the guns and ammo section and starts filling up a shopping cart. They go to load up the church van, but discover that it’s a smoldering husk. Somebody burned the van. Beuter says it doesn’t matter anyway. There’s a massive car pile up two blocks down. They ain’t getting a car north on 19 today. Melvin says they walk and they start walking north. The students walk North on U.S. 19. They see a sign that warns of bears in the forest. Glen and Beuter push shopping carts filled with supplies. Walt points to the sign.
Walt tells them to look out for bears. He says it in a spooky voice. A bear roars in the distance. Walt flinches and the others laugh. Two white men in their 20s run across the road. They are far enough down the road that they can’t see the students. A zombie bear chases them. It doesn’t see the students, either. The men run into the woods on the other side of the road. The bear chases them. Cynthia and Glen exchange a worried look. A few moments later, the screams of the men and the roar of the bear scare the students. They move faster.
The students enter the town of Port Richey on foot. They come across a restaurant called the Crab Shack. The side parking lot is filled with valet-parked cars. Walt says he's exhausted and suggests getting a car. He points towards the valet lot. Glen notes it's a valet lot and there will be keys inside. Melvin grins. He claps Walt on the back. Melvin and Walt go inside. The others wait in the parking lot.
Inside, Melvin makes his way to the hostess station. Walt follows. Melvin finds a pegboard behind the station, filled with car keys. He starts examining the keys. Walt says to get something big and comfortable. Melvin sees a key chain attached to a leather emblem for Cadillac. He takes the key chain and pockets it. Walt screams. Melvin turns to see what Walt is screaming about. A zombie bites Walt on the neck. Melvin smashes the zombie in the back of his head and it goes down. He helps Walt stumble back outside. Glen runs over to check on Walt. Walt is already a zombie. Cynthia says to restrain him! They’ll give him the cure when they get back. Glen and Melvin grab Walt. Jodi restrains him with bungee cords. Beuter puts a gag in Walt’s mouth. He hits the key fob and the Cadillac honks and the lights flash on and off. Melvin and Beuter guide Walt to the Cadillac. Glen and Cynthia follow them. Melvin unlocks the car. They put Walt in the back and buckle him in. Glen gets in the back. Cynthia gets in the passenger’s seat. The others cram in. Glen sits next to Walt.
Melvin drives the Cadillac. Cynthia sits up front, looking at the map. She folds the map and pits it away. She notes the cure comes from manatee urine. She asks how they are going to gather it. Can they make then pee? Melvin asks how do you make a manatee pee. Beuter says "practice." Everyone bursts into laughter. Zombie Walt tries to bite Glen, but the gag stops him. Everyone laughs harder.
They drive along U.S. 19. Just outside the Weeki Wachee Springs State Park, their tires blow. He pulls into the parking lot. Everyone gets out. Glen walks towards the highway. He sees spikes tossed randomly in the road. He picks one of the spikes and shows it to the others. Glen says that wasn't an accident. The other students are shocked.
Skink welcomes them to the world-famous and wonderful Weeki Waachi Springs! They turn to see Skink pointing a gun at them. He invites them inside. He waves them inside. His gun, and his eyes, never leave them. Skink escorts the students inside. The walls are heavily decorated with magazine pictures and posters and news articles. There are bookshelves on nearly every wall, crammed with books and knick knacks and pop culture artifacts. It’s amazing how much he’s put up in such a short time. He welcomes them to his castle, where he is king. Don’t make any sudden movements. Florida is a Stand Your Ground state. That means that he can shoot them on his property and the law won’t doing anything about it. Cynthia looks at him strangely. She says what law? Glen says Florida is essentially a state of anarchy. Skink asks if they think that makes him less or more likely to shoot them. Cynthia and Glen exchange a look of concern.
Skink tells them to follow him. He goes downstairs to an underwater observation room. The students follow. He waves his arms to present the viewing windows. Beyond them, four women wearing Mermaid costumes swim around a group of four SCUBA tanks. Cynthia asks what they are. He says they are his mermaids. The students rush to the windows to look. The mermaids take a breath from the regulators, then swim over to the windows. The mermaids signal that they need help. They point to collars around their necks. Each has a metal hoop coming from it that a chain attaches to. Skink says they are his property. Sydney and Jodi exchange looks of disgust. Skink asks why they are in his land. Cynthia said they're here looking for the cure. Skink is puzzled, he doesn't know about the zombie apocalypse. Cynthia said all they know is that it is in manatee urine. Skink tells them to follow him. He walks back upstairs. The students follow. He leads them to the side window that looks out on the staff parking lot. A milk tanker truck sits near the back. Skink tells them it’s filled with manatee urine. He's been hoarding it for years. Just in case. He says you never know when the U.N. and FEMA and Venezuela are gonna invade. They’re probably behind this zombie problem.
Jodi whispers that this guy's crazy. Cynthia says they have to save the mermaids. Skink hears them whispering and gets angry. He waves the gun at them and tells them to go back downstairs.
The students head back downstairs. Once there, the students move away from the stairs and close to the viewing windows. Walt looks through the viewing window and sees a number of dead bodies at the bottom of the spring. A few others look at the bodies in the water. They don’t let Skink see their shocked reactions. Skink says they can't have the manatee urine, it's his. Melvin tells Walt to make a distraction and tells Beuter to sandwich Skink. Walt starts freaking out, waving his hands and screaming. Then he rushes at Skink, quickly weaving back and forth. Skink is surprised and freezes at first. Then he raises the gun to fire. Melvin and Beuter tackle Skink at the same time, knocking the gun from his hand. It goes off, but misses everyone. It hits one of the viewing windows and water pours through the hole. The glass start to crack. Cynthia tells everyone to get upstairs. She tells Jody to get the mermaids and tells Glen to get the gun. Everyone jumps into action.
Everyone stands on the dock near the spring. The mermaids are out of the water and out of their mermaid costumes. Skink is tied up and on his knees. One of the MERMAIDS holds a gun on Skink. Skink says the mermaids will kill him. The students don't care. Jodi asks the mermaids if they can take the tanker of manatee urine. A blonde mermaid rummages through Skink’s pockets, looking for the key. Melvin asks if they can also take the jeep. The blonde mermaid tosses him the keys. He catches them easily. The students head towards the parking lot.
Outside, Jodi gets behind the wheel of the tanker. Beuter rides shotgun. The rest of the students ride in Skink’s Jeep. Melvin drives. They head northwest on Stare Road 50. There are a lot of abandoned cars on the highway, so the going is slow. The area is flooded with zombies. As the slow-moving caravan goes by, the zombies follow. Quite a sizable horde of zombies has gathered. Cynthia looks in her mirror and sees the horde. She asks what they should do about the horde. Melvin says as long as they can get out of this forest of cars soon, they’ll outrun the zombies and they’ll forget about us. Glen theorizes that if they douse themselves in urine, it'll scare off the zombies. They'll test it on Walt.
The tanker stops. The Jeep pulls up beside Jodi. Cynthia rolls her window down. Jodi’s is already down. She nods towards the road ahead. Everyone in the Jeep looks forward. The road is blocked by a group of cars, lined up perpendicular to the highway. The middle of the road is blocked by a single bus. On either side of the bus are three cars in a row. They create a passageway blocked by the bus. Hanging on the sides of this structure are heavily armed militia members. A man, George Mendez, steps forward with a megaphone. He says they'll be robbing the students today.
Glen gets out of the Jeep and walks slowly to Jodi’s window. He tells her they have a plan. George says his friends were part of the force that invaded the Capitol on January 6. They were all in prison up at Starke, where he used to work. Glen tells Jodi to get a glass of the manatee urine and meet him at the Jeep. He heads back to the Jeep as she goes to get the urine. Glen drones on. Glen takes the top off the jeep. Then he pulls Walt out of the back seat. Jodi arrives with a plastic 2-liter Coke bottle filled with urine. Glen takes the bottle and pours some of it on himself. He hands the bottle back to her, saying if she doesn't want to be eaten by zombies, she'll wear some urine, too.
Glen gets Walt out of the Jeep. He takes the gag away and steps back a few feet. Walt takes a step forward, then turns to walk away from Glen and Jodi. They note that it works. Glen grabs the bottle of manatee urine. He tells her to get some manatee urine on Beuter, while he take care of the others. Jodi goes back to the tanker. Glen gets in the Jeep. Melvin says he stinks. Glen hands him the bottle, saying it'll keep the zombies away. Glen turns the volume all the way up on the car stereo, then hits play. Spice Girls, “Wannabe” plays. Outside the Jeep, the music is loud. The zombie horde, which had lost focus, gets energized by the music and moves toward the Jeep.
The zombie horde moves towards the roadblock. They ignore the students and keep going. The militia members fire on the zombies, but it has essentially no effect. One or two of them shoot well enough to hit zombies in the heart and kill them The horde reaches the roadblock. They start pulling the militia members down and eating them. A few of the militia members flee. Glen shoots George with the rifle, killing him. One of the militia members jumps in the only vehicle they have keys for, the bus blocking the road. He drives off the road and gets stuck in a ditch. He gets out and tries to run, but the zombies overtake him. The roadblock is open. The students drive through.
The students continue along 50 until they come to the entrance to I-75. They take the entrance and merge onto the Interstate. They see a hive in the distance, but it takes no notice of them. They drive out of Florida.
Jodi drives the tanker, and Melvin the Jeep. They come across a bombed-out section of the road. Beuter points to a road sign. It says “Welcome to Macon, Georgia.” They look beyond the sign and see nothing but a big crater. Macon is gone. Jodi says they'll have to go around. Beuter looks at the map. He says they can take U.S. 80 over to I-75. Jodi takes the West exit to U.S. 80. The Jeep follows. The tanker takes the exit to I-475. The Jeep follows.
The students drive past a truck stop with a Dunkin Donuts shop. A horde of zombie cops bang on the glass of the truck stop windows, trying to get inside. The zombie cops turn and chase the students. Jodi and Melvin drive faster. The zombie cops go back to the Dunkin Donuts.
Jodi pulls the tanker into the rest stop. Melvin parks the Jeep close to the front door. They take their weapons with them this time. They go inside.
Everyone sits around, eating. Melvin asks what everyone is going to do after they save everyone. Beuter wants to help his QB Randall Floyd get healthy. Jodi is going to shower off the manatee urine smell. Melvin is gonna get a nice juicy steak. With gravy. Glen is gonna visit his father in New York. Melvin doesn't want to travel any time soon. Jodi needs a hot bath and a bottle of Merlot. Cynthia says she'll go to New York with Glen. He happily accepts. Everyone hoots and hollers, trying to embarrass them. Melvin gets up and grabs an energy drink for the road. The others grab as many energy drinks as they can.
Jodi parks the tanker outside Dr. Morgan’s warehouse. Melvin parks in front of Dr. Morgan’s house. They all get out and head for the front door of the house. Dr. Morgan steps outside. He’s followed by Ms. Wagner from Druid Hills High School. They all nod greetings. They tell Dr. Morgan that Kevin died. He says he's so happy the rest of them made it. Now they can save the world. He hugs Cynthia and Glen.
Dr. Morgan runs the machines that are processing the cure guns while Ms. Wagner and Cynthia look on. Cynthia asks how they're going to administer the cure. Dr. Morgan tells her to shoot the infected with the cure guns. They infected will pass out. When they wake up, they’ll be human again.
Cynthia leaves. Dr. Morgan prepares a syringe with the cure. Cynthia comes back in with the bound and gagged Walt. Dr. Morgan pulls up Walt’s sleeve. Walt tries to bite him, but can’t.
Dr. Morgan injects Walt with the cure. Walt passes out. They catch him and gently lay him on the couch. Cynthia yawns. Ms. Wagner tells Cynthia to get some rest. Cynthia heads towards the house while Dr. Morgan and Ms. Wagner keep cure gun production running smoothly.
Dr. Morgan and Ms. Wagner distribute cure guns to the refreshed students. Morgan tells them using the guns is super simple. Point and shoot. It’ll work as long as the dart breaks the skin. It’ll take a few minutes and they’ll go to sleep. When they wake up, they’ll be back to normal. Very tired, but normal. Any questions? No one has any. He tells them to get out there and save the world. The students leave. Each carries a cure gun. Beuter and Melvin carry a crate of extra cure guns.
Melvin drives them to the cul-de-sac. Everyone gets out of the Jeep. They go to disperse and run into Clint and the Raiders. Clint says they broke in to Druid Hills, matched the students to their yearbook pictures, looked up their records and found their addresses. Cynthia notices the burn scar on Clint’s face. Clint blames the students for burning down Redan high school, but they didn't do it, it must have been the zombies. A bullet hits Clint in the forehead, killing him. The other Raiders scatter. The students turn to see Beuter holding the smoking rifle. Glen tells him it was a good shot. Beuter thanks him. He hands the rifle back to Glen.
The students go to Walt’s house first, cure guns at the ready. A series of shots: Francine opens the basement door and zombie Marty emerges. Walt shoots him with a cure gun. Francine and Melvin catch Marty as he falls. The put him safely on the couch. The students wander around outside. They see Graham and Lissie stumbling around as zombies. Cynthia and Glen shoot them. The students carry the adults inside and put them to bed. Melvin comes across his mother. He shoots her with the cure gun. His father and several other zombies come at him. He shoots one zombie. He shoots another zombie. He shoots his father. Melvin seats his parents and the other ex-zombies on the couches and chairs on Melvin’s front porch. The school wolf comes running from behind a nearby house. It leaps at Melvin, who shoots it with a cure gun. It passes out in mid air Melvin catches it and carefully places it on the ground. He gives it a pet, then stands back up. Melvin initiates the school chant, the others respond. Melvin sits to stay with the wolf. The others keep walking.
The students sit around the table. With them are the parents who are alive and in Atlanta. Walt sits with Francine and Marty. Melvin sits with Caroline and Willard. Cynthia sits with Graham and Lissie. Jody sits with her parents, Glinda and Cody, and her two brothers Rex and Jeff. Glen doesn’t have any relatives present. Cody tells Jodi they might not stay long.
Using a remote control, Melvin turns on the news. An anchorperson says "the virus continues to rage elsewhere. Some places have easily obtained the cure, but it’s difficult to distribute to far-flung corners of the globe..." Caroline tells Melvin to turn the TV off. He does. Then sets down the remote.
Melvin clears his throat. Everyone quiets down. He says he wanted to thank everyone for being here and wish everyone who was turned into a zombie a speedy recovery. Nods and murmurs of acknowledgement. He says that without them, he wouldn’t have my parents back. He might be dead myself. EVERYONE might be dead, so thank you. Cynthia thanks him in return. Glen agrees. Nods and murmurs of agreement. Melvin holds his drink up. He offers a toast to the students of Druid Hills! Cynthia offers a toast to Kevin and Devin! Beuter offers a toast to the mermaids. Jodi smacks him on the shoulder. Walt's just glad to be home. Nods and murmurs of agreement. Everyone hugs their family members. Glen hugs Cynthia. They kiss. The students applaud. Graham asks when this relationship started. Everyone laughs.
