At the Early home, Dwayne, Judith, Kyra, Karl and Meredith sit in the living room, watching “Vampire In Brooklyn.” The adults are into it, Fred and Meredith are bored.
Meredith coughs. Judith checks on her. Meredith is tired and needs to go to bed.
An announcer breaks into the movie. Hurricane Carl is approaching the land and is only a few days away from local landfall. It’s expected to be a category 4 when it hits.
Judith pulls Dwayne aside. Dwayne says he's gonna stock up before the storm hits.
Judith asks what he's gonna do about the foreclosure.
He says he has a plan for that. He notes they’re the only bonsai tree farm that has weather-proof storage. The others are all gonna be wiped out. It’ll go from a crowded market to a monopoly.
Judith is skeptical.
Meredith goes to bed.
Dwayne drives up to the house and parks near the front door to the house. Judith comes out to help him. Dwayne opens the trunk of his car and grabs a case of bottled water. Judith asks if he got the pads? He did.
Dwayne puts his hand to his mouth. He drops the case of water and vomits onto the grass.
Judith asks if he is okay. He says he might need to go to the doctor.
Dwayne picks up the case of water and carries it inside. Judith watches after him with concern.
Unseen by the Earlys, George, Billy and Fred watch them. They note that the Earlys are stocking up.
Fred asks why they can’t get stuff for the storm.
George says they will some day.
At the Stroke Recovery Center in Austin, Texas, Charley is unwell. He wants to tell Barbra something, but she thinks he should rest.
He wants to know what's going on with the junkyard. He says he'll go crazy if she doesn't keep him informed.
Dr. Carter Artest says the tests show that the treatment isn’t working and chances are that his condition won’t improve. He says they should make whatever preparations they need. Say whatever goodbyes they need to say.
Charley comforts Barbra.
At the Black Sheep Civic Society Lodge, the BSCS meets. Koy asks what they're going to do about the oil rigs. He says they don’t produce any oil, they siphon energy from beyond this dimension, but the boxes are supposed to prevent any unwanted visitors. The boxes are starting to fail. He says they're looking at a whole heap of trouble.
Boone doesn’t seem to understand, it’s all over his head. He says they should wait for Bryant to get back. Koy gets angry and pushes for them to act.
Boone gavels him down. Koy gets upset and leaves. He said that when this situation blows up, he's not going to be part of it.
Audrey carries a stack of paper and a stapler down main street, stapling flyers for the upcoming Women’s Business Roundtable to the various bulletin boards outside each store.
Judith walks towards the library, she sees Audrey and approaches. Audrey hands Judith a flyer. Judith says she'll be at the meeting.
Judith is headed to the library to research the book. Judith and Audrey say they'll meet for a drink later.
George and Ricky lay in bed, post-sex. Ricky thinks Koy doesn’t like rednecks or small-town business very much. George says the same is true of Ricky. George asks if there is anything they need to worry about. Ricky says they have to keep an eye on both Koy and the alternate-dimension stuff. They ready to have sex again.
Dax Morrison hides in the bushes across the street from Ricky’s house. He takes pictures with a fancy camera.
George comes outside and gets in his car. Dax can’t get a clear photo of his face. Dax takes pictures of George driving away.
Ricky comes outside. Dax ducks below the bushes, but he’s not fast enough. Ricky pretends not to notice and gets in his car. He slowly drives away. Dax stands up and Ricky sees him in his rearview mirror. He drives away with a grin on his face.
At Sid’s Delicious Cafe, Kyra leans on the counter, staring at her paycheck. Allie finishes up with a customer. Kyra complains about minimum wage and taxes keeping her take home pay low.
Kyra says she owes $563 in old fees and then has to tuition, books, supplies and housing. She's afraid it's going to take a long time.
Allie says she'll take Kyra on a date.
Sid tells the girls not to kiss in the store.
The girls giggle. Allie returns to the register and serves the next customer.
Fred wanders across the busy schoolyard. He sees a small group of Freshman girls and approaches them. He spreads rumors that Meredith tried to kill herself. The freshmen girls are skeptical and leave Fred alone. He looks for others to spread the rumors to.
Ronnie approaches the Hasley home. He knocks on the door and waits. George answers. Ronnie says the daughter got a little suspicious, but he played it off. Ronnie gives George a map. George pays him.
Fred and George watch TV. Fred wants to watch RuPaul’s Drag Race, but George makes a homophobic remark and says no. They watch hockey instead.
Tukabatchee High plays their arch-rivals Panama City Bay High School. The gym is packed and covered with signs and banners reflective of the rivalry.
Karl drives down the court. He hits Theo with an alley-oop and the fans erupt. The Warriors lead by 1, 66-65.
Aaron knocks the ball away from a Tornadoes player. Karl dives for the ball, but knocks it out of bounds. The clock stops with 34 seconds.
Russell, who has been riding the bench, shakes his head and insults Karl. Coach Gallant hears Russell and shakes his head.
The Tornadoes inbound the ball. After a few passes, one of their players gets an easy lay-up. The Tornadoes lead by one.
Karl drives down the court. He fakes a pass and takes a look at the clock. There are 7 seconds left.
Karl fakes out a Tornadoes player and sets up for a 3.
He takes the shot. It hits the rim and bounces upward. The entire gym is on the edge of their seats.
The ball falls through the net and the Warriors win. The fans erupt with happiness. The Warriors players and coaches mob Karl.
Russell walks back to the locker room, not acknowledging Karl. Gallant watches Russell go.
At Tukabatchee State Prison, Barkley, Jackson, Ronnie, Michael and a few other prisoners gather in the TV room, speaking in whispers.
Barkley says they have to do something. Jackson says they're gonna take Buss out. Ronnie asks what they can do. Barkley says Michael's crew should handle it since they were the ones that got him in trouble. Michael laughs, saying his crew won't help, but he will.
The prison’s intercom system squawks to life. Neyland announces a lockdown. Guards enter the TV room and breaks the prisoners up. They all head to their cells.
Meredith walks towards the kitchen, where Judith is preparing dinner. Meredith falls to the floor. She starts foaming at the mouth and goes into convulsions. Judith runs over and cradles Meredith’s head. She calls Karl to phone 9-1-1. He does.
Paramedics load Meredith in the back of an ambulance. Judith climbs in and they slam the door shut. The Paramedics jump in and speed down the driveway. Dwayne hugs Karl and Kyra as they watch the ambulance drive away.
Billy and George watch all this as they work on repairing the fence.
Billy and George walk into the kitchen. Billy grabs two beers from the fridge, opens them, and gives one to George. George nods thanks. George asks what Billy thinks is wrong with Meredith. He doesn't know.
Billy asks George what the Black Sheep Civic Society is? George says it’s a civic club like the Masons or Jaycees. Billy asks why George is a member, but he's not. George says the membership is very exclusive and says Billy wouldn’t like it anyway.
Billy asks about the monsters? He says they seem to be attracted to something in the junkyard.
George says Billy sounds crazy. Billy asks what they're gonna do if the monsters come back, but George doesn't answer.
Fred walks down the school hallway, heading for the exit door. Darci, Tameka and Valentina block his way. He tries to shoo them away, but they continue to block him.
They confront him about spreading rumors about Meredith. He denies it. They tell him to knock it off. They say he knows she was bitten by a dog, it was his dog.
He gets upset about the dead dog. They threaten him that their male family members and friends will beat him up. They say everyone thinks he's a loser.
Fred walks away in a huff. The girls laugh at him.
Dwayne coughs as he enters Rincon’s Hardware Store. The clerk, Freddie, looks up from his magazine.
Dwayne says he needs a gun. Freddie notes he just bought one. Dwayne says he needs something bigger.
Koy enters the store. Dwayne gives him a brief glance and turns back to Freddie.
Dwayne asks for the most stopping power in a handgun.
Freddie walks through a beaded curtain to the back of the store. Dwayne looks at Koy. Dwayne says he's dealing with some invasive species.
Freddie returns, carrying a Smith & Wesson Model 500. Dwayne smiles at the long-barreled revolver. He hands it to Dwayne, who holds it very delicately. Dwayne looks the gun up and down.
Freddie says the gun will cost $1,500. Dwayne whistles. He weighs the gun, getting used to its feel in his hand. He thinks for a moment. He decides to take it.
Freddie takes the gun into the back to wrap it up. Dwayne turns to Koy and waits. Koy says Dwayne must really be dealing with some pretty invasive species? Dwayne says Koy has no idea.
Koy hands Dwayne his business card. Koy says if Dwayne needs any extermination help, let him know. Dwayne looks at the card, then pockets it.
Freddie comes back and hands Dwayne a bag. Dwayne gives Freddie his credit card. He scans it.
At the Santa Rosa County Library, Judith carries a stack of books to a table and sets them down next to her open laptop. She works on research for her book.
Judith places her books on the shelving cart. She’s sees someone duck behind the bookshelves. She looks down a couple of different aisles, but she doesn’t see anyone. She shrugs and exits the library.
As she goes, Billy emerges from the stacks and follows her.
Judith walks down the sidewalk towards Main Street.
Billy follows. He’s at a distance for a while. Then he gets closer. When he gets even closer, she finally notices. She starts to run. Billy runs, too.
Judith runs faster, then turns onto Main Street. She runs into Audrey. Judith almost falls, but Audrey catches her. Audrey came to get her for the meeting. Judith looks towards the library. Billy is gone.
They walk down Main Street. Judith once again looks for Billy to no avail.
At Tukabatchee High School, in Coach Gallant’s Office, Russell walks in.
Gallant says all the schools that were looking into Russell have identified him as a problem child. They’ve all withdrawn their scholarship offers.
Gallant tells Russell his attitude has been toxic lately. He kicks Russell off the team.
Russell walks out of the office, slamming the door behind him.
Russell and Fred are watching TV. Fred flips through the channels. He stops on a Lakers-Kings game. Russell says he doesn't want to watch basketball after kicked off the team. They watch hockey.
Audrey convenes the meeting of the Women’s Business Roundtable in the banquet room at Sid’s Delicious. Judith and Maggie are among the audience sitting at the very front of the room. The main thing on the agenda tonight is to start raising hurricane relief funds as soon as they can.
At Tukabatchee State Park, it starts raining. A glowing blue monster emerges from the Gulf waters. It’s the size of a wolf, but has hairless, lizard-like skin. It opens its mouth to reveal row after row of razor-sharp teeth. It roars into the darkness, then heads towards the town.
At Tukabatchee Hospital, Dwayne, Judith, Kyra and Karl nervously wait in a hospital waiting room. Two doctors enter the room, Dr. Tagachi and Dr. Samson
Dwayne tells Tagachi how Meredith was wounded.
He asks if they saw any blue animals. Dwayne says no, but Karl and Kyra say they did. Tagachi is interested, but he can't tell them more.
He says there is an antidote, but they have to fly it in. He asks them to tell him if they see any blue animals. He says to stay away from them.
Dr. Tagachi gives Dwayne a prescription bottle. and tells him to take pills daily.
A group of four masked men walk down the Early driveway, led by Russell. The rain is steady. They carry baseball bats and crowbars. They speed up and jog until they reach the back yard and Kyra’s art.
Russell gestures to Kyra’s statues and says to destroy all of them. The thugs begin bashing the statues. The art crumbles. Russell takes particular glee in dismantling Fat Mama. Once all the statues are destroyed, the thugs stand breathing heavy. Russell leads the thugs towards the front yard.
Dwayne pulls the car into the driveway and parks in front of the door. The only other person in the car is Karl. The rain beats down on the roof of the car.
Dwayne runs inside and grab some stuff for Judith and Meredith. Karl gets out and leans against the car. He pulls his hoodie up over his head. Dwayne runs inside.
Russell pulls off his mask as he leads his friends back toward the junkyard.
He sees Karl and accosts him. Karl cowers closer to the car as Russell and the others surround him. Karl thinks Russell is interested in the basketball. He brightens up. Russell isn't interested and thinks Karl stole his position. Karl tries to walk away, but Russell’s friends block him. Karl points out he plays a different position. Russell punches him in the face. The thugs start punching Karl. One knocks him to the ground. They start kicking him.
Russell stomps on Karl’s left hand and Karl screams. Karl grabs his clearly broken hand with his uninjured hand. He’s in agony.
Somewhere nearby the monster howls. Everyone freezes in fear. The thugs take off running. Russell follows reluctantly, leaving Karl crying in the rain.
Dwayne runs out of the house, carrying the Smith & Wesson. Dwayne rushes to Karl’s side. He asks Karl if he's okay. Karl says his hand is broken. Dwayne says they'll go to the hospital.
The monster roars again. By now, it sounds like it’s coming from the back yard.
Karl gets in and shuts the door. Dwayne looks towards the back yard and holds up the gun. He moves forward. Dwayne steps around the corner of the house. The monster bulrushes Dwayne, knocking him down. The monster towers over him. Dwayne shoots, clipping the monster on its side. It rears back and swats him with a claw. The gun flies from Dwayne’s hand and slides under the house. Dwayne thrusts his feet upward into the monster’s stomach. The beast flies off of him and smashes into the front of the car. Karl screams inside.
The monster leaves a smear of glowing blue blood on the hood. The rain immediately washes it away.
Dwayne rises to his feet and looks for the gun. He can’t see it in the rain.
He hears the monster squeal in pain. He kicks it. It squeals again. It rolls onto its side. Dwayne watches the monster start to struggle. He looks around and sees the open barn door. He runs for the barn.
The monster struggles to its feet. Dwayne runs inside. The monster runs toward Dwayne. Dwayne emerges from the barn. He holds an axe above his head. He runs at the monster, screaming. He brings the axe down, burying it in the monster’s back. It squeals a sound so high-pitched, it hurts Dwayne’s and Karl’s ears. Dwayne tries to pull the axe free, but it sticks. He screams and tries again. It comes free. Dwayne brings the axe down again, making another deep cut in the monster’s hide. It sticks again. The monster collapses to the ground, dead. Dwayne lets go of the axe and leans forward, breathing heavily. He slowly makes his way to the car and gets in. He and Karl hug.
The Silver Slipper is the fanciest building in town. The rain has lightened up a bit.
Kyra and Allie walk towards the front door. Allie is dressed up. Kyra’s wearing the same clothes she wore to the hospital.
Kyra apologizes for not dressing up more. Allie grabs her by the hand and says it's okay, she just came from the hospital.
Allie looks her in the eyes. She wipes the rain from Kyra’s forehead. She tells Kyra she's beautiful.
Allie leans in and kisses her on the lips. Allie grabs Kyra’s hand and pulls her inside.
Kyra and Allie sit at a table, looking up at the waitress, who pours them more wine. She announces that it's art night tonight and they are free to peruse any of the displays from local artists.
Kyra looks around the room at the art displays. She says she wants her art to appear in a show. Allie says she thinks that will happen.
Allie crawls down the driveway to the Early home. Dwayne and Karl are already gone. There’s a trail of glowing blue blood to the barn. The rain washes it away slowly.
Kyra moves forward, following the blood. The back yard catches her eye. She takes off running for the back yard. Allie follows Kyra. Kyra walks into the back yard and sees all of her statues destroyed. Kyra starts crying. Allie puts her arms around Kyra.
Fred walks down the hallway, an angry look on his face. He comes to the school’s trophy case. He looks around and sees a metal trash can. He picks it up and throws it into the display. The glass shatters.
Fred clears the broken glass out of his way. He grabs trophies and starts throwing them down the hallway. Students and teachers flow out of classrooms. Teachers and staff move students away from Fred to keep them safe. Fred screams as he destroys the trophy case.
Two armed sheriff's deputies quickly approach Fred, guns drawn and aimed at the boy. Fred stops. He places his hands on his head. Deputy #1 cuffs Fred. They escort him outside as the students applaud the deputies.
Karl walks into the hospital waiting room. He has a cast on his left hand. Darci, Tameka and Valentina sit with Dwayne, Judith an Kyra.
Karl asks how Meredith is. She’s in with the doctors. She’s gotten worse. Karl Frowns.
Tameka asks how his hand is doing. He's doing okay, but he's gonna miss two games. Tameka asks him on a date. He says yes. Tameka smiles. Darci and Valentina cheer.
George stands in the police station lobby, waiting. Fred comes out, a guilty look on his face. He tries to makes excuses, but George won't let him.
George drives, Fred sulks in the passenger seat. The rain beats down on the car. George goes fast and recklessly.
George is angry. He tells Fred getting angry is okay, but you gotta deal with it well. George tells him: "Figure out WHY you’re angry. Then you can figure out the best way to get over what’s making you angry. You can figure out what to do. Sometimes that means breaking some shit. Sometimes it means kicking a little ass. Sometimes it means you do something else, like talking to someone or reporting someone to the police."
Fred says he's no snitch.
George says: "That’s some gangsta rap bullshit. You know what happens to snitches? They walk while the real criminals go to jail. Don’t get me wrong, don’t get CAUGHT snitchin’, that’s dangerous, but sometimes it’s you or the other guy, and no one’s gonna save your ass but you when the shit goes down.
Fred considers George’s words."
George parks the car. He and Fred get out and they go inside.
At the stroke center, Charley lays in the bed, not looking well. Barbra holds a phone up, it’s on speaker. He tells the boys he's not gonna make it. Barbra fights off tears. George is choked up. Billy and Russell are shocked. Fred
Charley, says they have to decide a few things. He says George is now the man
of the house and as the man of the house, George, will be making all the big decisions for the family going forward. Business decisions. Household decisions.
Charley says: "It’s time this family is heard in this town again. I’m gonna hook you up with my old campaign manager. He never lost a race. George, you’re gonna be mayor."
Barbra hands the phone to Charley and leaves the room. Charley coughs as he watches her go.
Charley tells George to somewhere private. George takes the phone off speaker and walks outside. Charley takes his phone off speaker. He says it's time to tell George the things you really need to know. Charlie speaks quietly into the phone, paranoid, watching for Barbra to return.
Koy walks through town square. The rain is light. He sees a man in a suit, Bundy, sitting on a bench. He sits down next to Bundy. They introduce themselves to each other.
Bundy asks Koy what he's got. Koy says: "How about a local conspiracy linked to an international corporation. A group of local operatives that are using illegal technology to illegally and unsafely tap into another dimension and they’ve let in unholy abominations that could threaten national security."
He's got Bundy's attention.
Koy says he has all the names and documentation Bundy needs.
Bundy asks: "How serious is this situation? When is our act-by date?"
Koy says they have until after the hurricane. Bundy asks if Koy is certain. Koy is hesitant.
Bundy says he'll be in touch and walks away.
Koy gets up and walks in the opposite direction from Bundy.
Kyra knocks on the Hasley door. Billy answers. The rain beats down on Kyra.
She wants to talk to George. Billy gets him. George shuts the door behind him. He pulls his jacket tight against the rain.
She expects an apology. He doesn't offer one. He says Russell is harmless.
Kyra thinks he must be crazy. She says Russell broke Karl’s hand and he destroyed all her art.
George is surprised. Kyra starts crying. George apologizes. He says Charley is dying.
Kyra also complains that her sister a father are sick because of the Hasley's dog. George frowns. He says her father killed our dog. He thinks they're even. Kyra gives him a dirty look. She doesn't think so at all.
Kyra says they’re gonna have to call the police on Russell. File charges for assault and destruction of property.
George silently stares at the ground as the rain pours down on him. After a few moments, he pulls out his phone. He lets it get wet as he hits #1 on his speed dial. He puts it to his ear. It rings for a moment, then Ricky answers. George asks if he can visit Ricky, who says yes.
Audrey and Judith walk down Main Street. The rain is light. They come to the main bulletin board.
Judith grabs a flyer off the bulletin board. Audrey reads it. It says: “New Women’s Business Forum/Meeting 3 p.m. Saturday/Tukabatchee Public Library.”
Audrey is pissed. Judith reads the flyer and says Maggie can’t do that. There’s already a Women’s Roundtable.
Audrey's gonna talk to her lawyer.
Tukabatchee plays against the Woodham Titans. Karl sits on the bench, not dressed out. He’s frustrated as his team trails by a dozen. They don’t look good. Russell didn’t show up.
Theo takes a three pointer and misses. The crowd is upset. At the other end of the floor, a TITANS PLAYER goes for a layup and gets fouled hard by Dennis. The Titans player goes to the free throw line.
Dennis fouls out. He slowly makes his way off the court, griping as he goes.
The referee warns Dennis. Coach Gallant has to grab him and pull Dennis off the court to avoid a technical foul.
The Titans player makes both his free throws, much to the annoyance of the crowd. Karl looks on glumly, rubbing his cast as he watches.
Irving Buss sleeps in the solitary confinement cell at Tukabatchee State Prison. Neyland bangs on the door and wakes him up.
Vaught unlocks the cell. He says its time to pay the Piper. Buss rises into a seated position. He’s groggy.
Neyland slings Buss onto the floor. Vaught raises up a baton, preparing to hit Buss. Vaught hits Buss across the head. Buss screams. Neyland smashes Buss in the face with his baton. Buss crashes to the floor. Vaught and Neyland take turns hitting buss with their batons. Buss starts twitching.
They hit him again and again. Buss stops moving. He’s dead.
Barkley and Jackson lay in their beds in dark, adjacent cells. The prison intercom squawks on. Vaught says: "Good evening, murderers, rapists and child molesters, I hope you’re having a quiet evening. We regret to inform you that attempted murderer and convicted pedophile Irving Buss was killed during an escape attempt tonight. We will be under lockdown, day and night, until further notice. Anyone found in violation of the lockdown will be punished severely."
Barkley and Jackson stand in their cells and exchange a look of concern.
Vaught continues: "Furthermore, we’ll be looking for Buss’s co-conspirators and will be prosecuting them to the full extent of the law."
Barkley and Jackson agree they're fucked.
A guard comes walking down the corridor. He smashes his baton on the bars. Barkley backs away.
